All Korean language materials are Romanized in public catalog for searching and displaying of the bibliographic information. Searching by Romanized form of title, author, keyword, etc. is necessary. Our library uses McCune-Reischauer Romanization System (M-R) for Korean language materials, which is different from the Romanization rule issued by the Korean Government.
The chart for M-R system is available at the following link http://www.library.ucla.edu/libraries/eastasian/korean_table/krntable.htm, provided by UCLA Libraries.
Our library system allows us to search materials in Korean language by inputting Korean characters in the search fields. However, this search in Korean is very limited to some of materials in the Korean collection at East Asia Library. Older materials cataloged before the library system can support the Korean language would not be retrieved from searches made in Korean characters. In addition to these, recently received but not fully cataloged materials would not be searchable by inputting Korean characters. Therefore, please remember to complete your search with Romanized title/author/keyword.
In order to make your search available with Korean characters, please remember to click Unicode at the bottom of each page of the Online Library Catalog.
If you make the set-up described above, your search either by Korean or Romanization will display Korean characters as well as transliterated titles. This will be very helpful for you to read bibliographic information from online catalog.
Open the handout on examples of searching keys.
Please feel free to ask Romanization help or any other searching tips for Korean materials from the Korean Studies Librarian.
