S.E. Solberg, the retired professor of the Asian American studies program at UW, donated Korean vernacular periodicals published from 1914 to 1963. The titles are considered early Korean periodical publications predominantly in the subject of Korean literature. Some publications cover other subject areas such as politics, art, religions and popular cultures as well. The collection is very unique and in many instances we are the only library who has the holding in OCLC/RLIN including issues that are the only surviving copies. As the collection is old and brittle, the project started out to preserve the materials to save the contents and physical formats of materials for the future use. In addition to the preservation, Allen Endowment has funded the establishment of TOC (Table of Contents) database, which made possible to search article titles from the table of contents of the whole collection, which wasn't otherwise available through traditional indexing tools.
Searches can be conducted by author, article title, journal title or keywords (all fields) either by the M-R Romanized form or by inputting Korean (Hangul). The display of contents will be though in original characters with transliterated Romanization in parenthesis. The search result will be able to direct the cited journal title to the Online Catalog of the University of Washington Libraries for further description of bibliographic and holding information. The browsable article list by journal title is available as well.
See more detail information about indexing rules that are used for the project.
Acknowledgement
Grateful acknowledgment is given to the Kenneth S. Allen Endowment of the University of Washington Libraries for funding of this project. I would like to acknowledge my intellectual debts to Mr. Seung B. Kye, a Korean Studies Ph.D candidate at the University of Washington for his enormous contribution on decoding and compiling the TOC data of this collection. I also deeply thank Eileen Llona, International Studies Computer Services Librarian, of the University of Washington Libraries, for her technological expertise and dedication to this project to make these valuable contents available through a searchable database in a web environment.
