Directions to the East Asia Library |
The University of Washington campus is located in the northeast part of the city near Union Bay and Lake Washington. It can be easily reached from downtown by public transportation or private car. The East Asia Library is on the third floor of Gowen Hall. | ||

Coming by Bus |
Express busses operating on the nos. 70, 71, 72, 73, and 74 lines serve the University District and provide a quick connection to campus. These busses can be boarded in the downtown transit tunnel on weekdays between 5:00 AM and 11:00 PM and on Saturday between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM. During the day busses on these lines run about every 10-15 minutes. The trip to campus requires approximately 20 minutes. Local busses on these lines can be boarded on the east side of Third Avenue and at certain other locations downtown. Travel time to campus is about 30 minutes. The bus stop at University Way N.E.and N.E. 41st Street (in front of the European Pastry Shop) is close to the campus. |

Walking Directions From the Bus Stop to the East Asia Library |
Visitors coming by bus nos. 71, 72, 73, or 74 are advised to get off at the stop at University Way N.E. and N.E. 41st Street. To go to the campus, walk down to the corner of 41st and University Way and turn left. Go to the end of the block and cross 15th Avenue N.E. Walk up the stairway or ramp onto campus. You will see the entrance to the underground parking garage on your right. As you progress, you will pass the Undergraduate Library on your right (a large, modern brick building) and Parrington Hall (a classic brick building) across the street on your left. The next building you come to will be Kane Hall on your right (a large brick building). Turn to the right as you pass this building. You will see William Savery Hall on your left (a gothic style building). Walk down the road and the next building on your left (just across from Savery on the quadrangle) will be Gowen Hall. The East Asia Library is on the third floor of this building. |

There are two additional entrances to the campus on 15th Avenue N.E. One is the pedestrian overpass on the north side of N.E. Campus Parkway across from the Henry Gallery. The other is the vehicle and pedestrian entrance at gate no. 5 on 15th Avenue N.E. and N.E. 40th Street. |
Coming by Taxi |
Taxis are available from all major hotels in downtown Seattle. Ask the driver to let you off at the corner of 15th Avenue N.E. and N.E. 41st Street next to the University of Washington campus. Travel times range from 15 to 30 minutes. |
Coming by Car |
Drivers new to the city may wish to obtain a good street map after reading the following driving instructions. |
From downtown, go north on I-5 and take exit 169 (45th Street/University of Washington). From the exit, turn right onto N.E. 45th Street and go straight, crossing Roosevelt, 11th, 12th and Brooklyn. You will pass the Deca Hotel on the left and the Neptune Theater on the right. Cross University Way and head up the slope. At the intersection of N.E. 45th Street and 15th Avenue. N.E. drivers have a choice: |
1. Go straight through the intersection for about half a block and make a right into the entrance to the campus. This leads to the surface parking lots and the flagpole. |
Or: |
2. Turn right onto 15th Avenue. N.E., proceed to N.E. 41st Street and make a left turn into the underground parking garage. |
From the Eastside, go west on SR-520 and take the Montlake exit after crossing the Evergreen Point floating bridge. Merge into Montlake Boulevard and move into the left-hand lanes. Cross the Montlake Bridge and go to the next major intersection where the road forks. Turn left onto N.E. Pacific Street and go straight, passing the Uninversity of Washington Medical Center on your left. Continue on to 15th Avenue. N.E. and make a right turn. Go north on 15th Ave. N.E. to N.E. 40th Street and make a right turn into the entrance to the campus. Alternately, continue going straight for one block to N.E. 41st Street and turn left into the underground parking garage. |
A Word About Parking on Campus |
When you enter the campus, stop at the gatehouse and tell the parking attendant you are going to the East Asia Library. You will be assigned to the nearest available lot. An all-day fee will be due on entrance. Pro-rated refunds are given depending on the length of time a car was parked on campus. For current parking options, visit campus Parking Services. There is no charge for parking on Saturaday after 12:00 noon or on Sunday, except when special events are taking place on campus. Campus maps are available from the parking attendants. |
Parking on campus is regulated. Parking in loading zones or other reserved areas could result in your vehicle being ticketed and/or towed. |
