Will Institute trainees be able to borrow books from the University of Washington Libraries?

Yes!
We have made arrangements so that you will have library privileges and access to University of Washington systems during your stay in Seattle. All trainees should receive, by postal mail, an envelope from the University of Washington Library Cashier. This envelope was mailed May 30, 2008, to the address used for Institute registration. The envelope contains everything you'll need to know in order to borrow materials from the UW Libraries, and also provides a UW NetID. This UW NetID will be used to access curriculum materials that are posted on our website, to connect to the UW wireless network (for those of you using it), to access your UW library account, as well as other password protected materials and services at the University of Washington.

All materials borrowed will need to be returned before you leave Seattle. Individuals are responsible for any fines accrued. See the UW Libraries website for details on borrowing privileges for visitors.

Your UW NetID will expire at the end of the Summer Institute. UW NetIDs are individual identifiers for accessing information and online services and provide access to your personal account information; therefore, you'll need to keep your password secret. The default passwords are often hard to remember, but in the envelope with your UW NetID you'll receive instructions on how to change your password. More information on UW NetIDs can be found on the UW website.

Welcome to the UW Libraries!

Are there classes held on the weekend of July 26 and 27, 2008?
There are no classes that weekend. Trainees may want to do some sightseeing in the Seattle area.

Can you confirm my registration?
Registration is being handled by a separate group here at the University of Washington, and they can answer any questions you may have about processing your registration and payment. Please contact them at

Are there kitchens that trainees can use in the residence hall?
The residence hall has kitchenettes with stoves in several wings and microwaves in all the other wings. See the Amenities section on the Staying on Campus page.

How many rooms share each bathroom?
In Hansee Hall, approximately 300 people share 36 restrooms. The first floors have 10-12 rooms and 1 restroom per wing. The second and third floors have 32-33 rooms and four restrooms (2 male, 2 female) per wing. Each restroom has 2 toilet stalls and 1 shower.

Our group is too large to fit on one floor so Institute Trainees will be split between two floors. Most people will use the restrooms that are closest to them in their own wing however they are welcome to use other restrooms if one is full.

Will the residence hall provide Ethernet cards and cables?
The kind of Ethernet card and cable you need depends on the kind of laptop you have. Therefore trainees will need to bring those items with them. Complete details on how to access the internet from within the residence halls is available on the Ethernet Access page.

Is there wireless access on campus?
The main classroom, the libraries, and many other locations on campus have wireless access. The residence halls currently have Ethernet access. Institute Trainees will be given access to University of Washington wireless networks upon arrival at the institute.

What are the library hours?
The hours of operation vary for each library. Please see the Hours and Libraries page for the University of Washington Libraries.

For the post-curriculum trip, what costs will be covered?
The post-curriculum trip is optional, and attendees will need to cover their own costs. A rough approximation is $200 per day plus airfare. More details on that trip will be posted when they're available on the Post-Curriculum Trip page.

We have also posted detailed information for Institute Trainees in the following sections of this website.
