Class Description
Drawing on the experience of CALIS and Beijing University Library, this four-session course will discuss major issues of the resources and services of digital library, including theoretical approaches and practical strategies. There will be a 30-minute discussion at the end of each session.
本课程以CALIS和北大的实践经验为基础,理论与实践结合,讨论数字图书馆的资源和服务问题。每次上课安排30分钟左右时间讨论1-2个题目

Developing strategies and a project plan, for providing the services of Chinese electronic resources in trainee’s home library.

为自己所在的东亚图书馆制定中文电子资源服务的策略和具体方案。
Session 1: Current Situation and Developing Strategies of Chinese Digital Collections.
Topic and objective:
This session
- introduces the current development of Chinese electronic resources in Mainland China;
- discusses the initial evaluation, selection and sharing of Chinese electronic resources, basing on the framework of electronic collection development and some cases;
- provides guidance and references for the trainees to develop the strategies of Chinese electronic resources in their home library.
Outline:
- 1.1 Current development of Chinese electronic resources in Mainland China: type, level and high-quality resources
- 1.2 Collection development strategies of electronic resources: main framework
- 1.3 The initial evaluation and selection of Chinese electronic resources: basing on the comparative analysis of Chinese ebooks (Superstar, Apabi, )
- 1.4 Sharing policies and models of electronic resources
Discussion:
What are the characteristics and object user of your home East Asian Library? Aiming at the characteristics and user needs, what kind of Chinese electronic resources will be selected?
Session 2: The Assessment and Preservation of Chinese Digital Resources.
Topic and objective:
This session
- introduces the assessment system and indicators, with Chinese digital resource cases;
- briefly summarizes the preservation strategies of Chinese electronic resources;
- provides guidance and help for the trainees to evaluate the Chinese electronic resources.
Outline:
- 2.1 The assessment system and methodology of electronic resources
- 2.2 A comparative evaluation case of Chinese numerical and statistical databases
- 2.3 The preservation of licensed Chinese electronic resources
Discussion:
Exchange ideas, experiences and cases of the Chinese electronic resources among the trainees.
Session 3: Description and integration of Chinese digital resources.
Topic and objective:
This session
- introduces the integration ways and cases of Chinese electronic resources, basing on the methodology of integration and description of electronic resources;
- provides references for the trainees to develop the integration project of Chinese electronic resources in their home library.
Outline:
- 3.1 The integration and description of electronic resources
- 3.2 Bibliographic integration, with the case of Chinese e-journals (CNKI, VIP, Wanfang)
- 3.3 Metadata integration, with the case of Chinese ancient collections and multimedia
- 3.4 Cross-platform integration, with the case of CALIS single search platform
- 3.5 MARC record and LAS, with the case of Chinese thesis and dissertations

Is it necessary to integrate Chinese electronic resources in your home East Asian Library? If yes, what is the main difficulty and what kind of help do you need?
Session 4: User service of Chinese digital resources
Topic and objective:
This session
- introduces user service cases of CALIS and some key academic libraries in Mainland China;
- gives some new ideas and references about user services of Chinese digital resources.
Outline:
- 4.1 User-oriented digital library service
- 4.2 Service integration: digital library portal, with the cases of Peking University Library and CALIS
- 4.3 Information literacy service of Chinese electronic resources
- 4.4 Special collection and services, with some cases of Chinese special databases
- 4.5 Personal service of Chinese electronic resources
Discussion:
Can we make use of the user services of Chinese electronic resources in Mainland China to improve our own services in the home library?
