Class Description
Description
This session will take the form of a seminar to discuss practical issues on how to make use of available vendor services, including MARC record services, shelf-ready services, and online ordering of both print and electronic materials. This seminar will invite three major Chinese vendors, China National Publishing Industry Trading Corp. (CNPITC), China International Book Trading Corp. (CIBTC), and Beijing Rare Book Co., Ltd., to demonstrate their services.
The goal of this seminar is to bring together librarians from East Asian libraries of different size, type and operation to discuss and analyze vendors’ services in terms of library workflow, effectiveness of staff, and budget cost in the electronic environment.
Class Schedule
This seminar will be held on July 28, Monday, from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. in the afternoon, and again from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the evening. There will be a 30-minute break during the afternoon session. The first afternoon session will have librarians from different libraries share their thoughts and experiences on using vendor-provided records followed by a discussion period for questions and answers. The second afternoon session will have vendors introduce their services followed by questions and answers from the audience. The evening session will provide a hands-on session on vendors’ online services or private consultation with vendors.
Survey
Assignments Prior to Class: In order to conduct a better seminar I have compiled a survey, including some questions and a short essay, to find out more about you and your library’s operation. This survey focuses on using vendor-provided MARC records. It is due on June 30, 2008.
Survey Questions:
If your library is not using vendor’s record, you ONLY need to answer questions 1-6.
If your library is using vendor’s MARC and your colleague(s) will also attend the Summer Institute, please work together to answer all questions. In this case, your colleague who is directly involved with this operation will be able to help you with the questions. Even though your answers may be the same, please submit your surveys separately.
Short Essay:In addition to the questionnaire, I would like you to write a short essay, within 300 words, about your experiences or thoughts on using vendor-provided records. There are three topics at the end of the questionnaire; you may choose ONE that is most applicable to your work for your short essay.
Please rename the file with your name at the beginning of the file (example: ktyao_suvey.doc) and return it to me (kyao@hawaii.edu) by June 30 as I need your survey to prepare the seminar.
Download the survey (Word doc).
