Class Descriptions/Objectives
As the title indicates, this class focuses on collection development on Chinese materials in the digital era. It will introduce trends of the Chinese e-resource development, offers the instructor’s view about the impact of such development on collection development, and discuss the challenges as well as strategies for developing Chinese studies collection in this new and changing environment. The class emphasizes both values on theoretical/macro-level analysis and practical usefulness; hoping to offer the participants some applicable guidelines on the subject.
The class consists of two sessions. Session I is mostly conducted by lecture while Session II is mostly carried out by discussion. The participants are expected to prepare group papers after the Session I class. The papers are due the day before the Session II class, and will be used to lead and facilitate the class discussion in the Session II class (see Assignment).
Class Assignment: Group essay: the participants of the class will be divided into 4 groups. Each group is expected to select a topic from the topic list given by the instructor in Session I class (7/21), and write a short essay (2-4 pages) for class discussion in Session II class (7/24). The paper shall be straightforward, thought provoking, and thus facilitate the class discussion on the topic. Each group is encouraged to select a different topic though two groups may choose a same topic if preferred. Each group must have a presenter to present their paper to the class. The presentation is for five minutes, followed by 10 minutes class discussion. The instructor serves as the facilitator and moderator of the discussion class.
All essays are due to the instructor on July 23 (Wednesday) no later than 3:00 p.m.
