How to search films & other visual materials

New Titles

  1. Browse new titles in the UW film collection.

Search films with English subtitles

  1. Use Keyword search function in the main UW Library Catalog menu.
  2. Input "Japanese" and "feature films" and "English" or "Japanese" and "language" and "films" and "English" in the keyword fields.
  3. Submit your search.

Search by Theme

  1. Go to the Keyword search function in the UW Library Catalog menu.
  2. Enter "Japanese" and "feature films" along with the subject of the film you are searching for. For example, if you are looking for Japanese films with "family" as the subject matter, you would input "Japanese" and "feature films" and "family" in the search fields and click on Search .

Search by Directors

  1. Go to the Author search function in the main UW Library Catalog menu.
  2. Enter the director's name in the search field and press Enter or click on the Search button. For example: If you are looking for a movie directed by Akira Kurosawa, input "Kurosawa, Akira" in the search field and click on Search .
  3. Once your have obtained your search results, you must refine your results to include only records of film/media. You may do this by clicking on the [Limit/Sort] button located on the top of your screen. Then at the next screen, select [Videos, slides, Media] for the PUBLICATION Type:. Lastly, click on Limit/Sort items retreived using above data .

Search by Titles

  1. Go to the Title search function in the main UW Library Catalog menu.
  2. Enter the title of the movie your are looking for in the search field and press Enter or click on the Search button.
  3. Once your have obtained your search results, you must refine your results to include only records of film/media. You may do this by clicking on the Limit/Sort button located on the top of your screen. Then at the next screen, select [Videos, slides, Media] for the PUBLICATION Type:. Lastly, click on Limit/Sort items retreived using above data .

Search by Locations (East Asia Library/OUGL Media Center)

  1. Use Keyword search function in the main UW Library Catalog menu.
  2. Place "Feature films" and "Japan", or "Japanese" and "language" and "films" as keywords.
  3. Choose [East Asia Library] or [Odegaard Undergraduate Library] for Location:.
  4. Choose [Videos, Slides, Media] for PUBLICATION type:.
  5. Submit your search.

Search for movie reviews

New film records in the UW Library Catalog contain links to online movie reviews. For example, the record for the movie "Being John Malkovich" has a link called "connect to reviews of this title online" which takes you to the Movie Review Query Engine. However, for movies in the East Asia collection, you may wish to use the Movie Review Query Engine directly to search for reviews in English.
