Selected Journal Articles and Special Issues
The articles and special issues of journal listed here primarily discuss
the evolving discipline of Restoration Ecology, the philosophical aspects
of ecological restoration, or provide an overview or state-of-the-art
discussion of the discipline. For the most part, articles relating to
specific case studies, projects or types of restoration are not included.
See the list of databases for possible subject headings and keywords that
can be used for searching for more specific literature. The articles by
Light and Scherer illustrate the ethical and philosophical discussion
relating to restoration.

restoration ecology by one of the predominate experts in the field.

the Environment. Ruth A. Eblen and William R. Eblen (eds.) Boston;
New York. Houghton Mifflin Company. 1994. p 609-611.

briefly defining the discipline.

Restoration". Environmental Ethics vol. 18 (3), Fall 1996. p

the discussion to the social and political context of restoration.
- Restoration Ecology: Special Issues
- Vol. 5, (4).
December 1997 "Human-dominated ecosystems and the role of Restoration
Ecology."
Highlights the "ecological concepts on which sound
restoration is based", and "the need for it to move into the scientific
realm..."(editorial, p. 273.) "Developing the Conceptual Basis for
Restoration Ecology" by Edith B. Allen, W. Wallace Covington, and Donald
A. Falk defines the focus of the issue and discusses the attempts of the
National Science Foundation to encourage research in this area. These
papers are the result of a workshop held at the National Center for
Ecological Analysis and Synthesis in Santa Barbara in 1996.
- Vol. 5, (4s). December 1997 "Riparian Restoration." A second
special
issue that focuses on riparian restoration and relates specific projects
to the wider conceptual framework.
- Scherer, Donald. "Evolution, Human Living, and the Practice of
Ecological Restoration". Environmental Ethics. vol. 17 (4),
Winter 1995. p359-379.
Discusses the ethical justification for
restoration and considers it, perhaps, "a hoax of easy optimism and
self-deception...".
- Science: Special Issue
- Vol. 277, July 25, 1997.
"Human-dominated
Ecosystems".
A series of articles looking at the "study of human
influence on the planet" relating to fisheries, forests, coral reef, the
ocean, and ecosystems. "Hopes for the Future: Restoration Ecology and
Conservation Biology", by Andy P. Dobson, A.D.Bradshaw, and A. J. M. Baker
(p515-522) sees the discipline of restoration ecology as a complement to
conservation biology in restoring lands and preserving diversity. All the
articles have extensive bibliographies.
Books, Monographs and Reports
These represent only a small number of available publications. Not all
of
them have been reviewed as of July 1998, but most are regularly cited. The
list will be continually revised.
