The Salmon Subject Guide contains resources compiled at the Fisheries-Oceanography library. It is a starting point to researching salmon rather than an exhaustive list of resources. If you need help finding information, please ask a librarian for assistance.

DATABASES


(Note: The UW Libraries Catalog, Catalog of U. S. Government Publications, and NTIS on the Web are available to anyone. Only UW-affiliated users can access the other databases.)

UW LIBRARIES CATALOG The Libraries Catalog includes the book and journal holdings of all of the University of Washington Libraries collections. You can search for materials by title words, author names, subject headings, and keywords. Remember: the catalog will tell you if UW owns a journal but not about the contents of the journal. The Catalog is not the database to use to identify specific journal articles.

Tip: There are numerous Library of Congress Subject Headings pertaining to the subject of salmon. By using the subject headings when searching the UW Libraries Catalog, you can more closely focus your search results. The following are examples of LC Subject Headings related to this topic:

AQUATIC SCIENCES AND FISHERIES ABSTRACTS (ASFA) 1971+ ASFA indexes approximately 4500 journals worldwide covering all aspects of marine, freshwater and brackish water environments. Also, includes technical reports and conference papers.

CATALOG OF UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS from the Superintendent of Documents. Can be used to identify information available in Federal Depository Libraries; bibliographic records since 1994 are included. The University of Washington Libraries is a Federal Depository Library.

GEOBASE is a searchable database covering the period 1980 to the present which covers the subject areas of Geography, Ecology, Earth Science, and Marine Science.

NTIS 1964 + Indexes and abstracts U.S. Government-sponsored research,development, and engineering reports and analyses distributed by the National Technical Information Service. Includes NOAA Technical Reports. NTIS is also available for free on the Web covering the years 1990 to the present, usually without abstracts.

PYSCHINFO Contains citations and summaries of journal articles, books, and technical reports in the field of psychology, including animal behavior.

SOUND ACCESS Includes scientific and policy related materials covering Puget Sound and the adjacent inland waters. Indexes state and local documents, journal articles, technical reports and unpublished materials. Coverage ends with 1990. On hard drive at the Fisheries-Oceanography Library- please ask the librarian for passwords and assistance.

WATER RESOURCES ABSTRACTS (WRA) Contains abstracts of journal articles, monographs, and reports covering the development, management and research of water resources.

WILDLIFE WORLDWIDE More than 500,000 bibliographic records on animal and bird species, wildlife management issues, diseases, game and hunting; includes journals, monographs, conference publications, theses, and field studies.

ZOOLOGICAL RECORD Covers worldwide systematic zoological literature and other areas of zoology such as anatomy, morphology, physiology, reproduction, ecology, evolution, life history, and behavior. Indexes serials, monographs, newsletters, selected dissertations, and conference proceedings.
