Environmental Impact Statements (EIS)

The University of Washington Libraries collects Environmental Impact Statements dealing with the Pacific Northwest, primarily the local area, dating from the early 1970's to the present. Many are located in Government Publications, the Engineering Library and Special Collections and can be found by checking the UW Libraries catalog.

The National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA): This act establishes a national policy for the environment, provides for the establishment of the Council on Environmental Quality, and more.

The Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) coordinates federal environmental efforts, working closely with agencies and other White House offices.

The Council on Environmental Quality established the NEPA Taskforce to review NEPA implementing practices and procedures in several areas. The task force report, Modernizing NEPA Implementation, was presented to CEQ Sept. 24, 2003.

ECHO, Enforcement and Compliance History Online: Search this database for information on specific facility compliance history or for general compliance history by geographic area. The database has information for about 800,000 EPA-regulated facilities. The information includes facility characteristics, inspection and enforcement data and history, compliance summaries, and a demographic profile of a three mile area surrounding the facility.

Federal Register Environmental Documents: This site lists announcements of intent to file Environmental Impact Statements by year, month, and day, back to 1994. It is kept very current.

A note on Environmental Impact Statements: remember that drafts continue to be important even after the final report is written. Final EIS's may refer to information in the draft without actually reprinting the information.

A further note: the contents of the separate EIS database previously maintained by the UW Libraries were loaded into the UW Libraries online catalog in October 2006. Keyword searching in the UW Libraries catalog is the recommended way to locate them. Over time the minimal records from the database will be replaced by fully cataloged records.
