The Census Bureau offers a wealth of social, demographic and economic information. Their continuing work on the 2000 Census is described here. Their home page includes the American FactFinder, Statistical Abstract of the United States, and the City and County Databook (selected tables only). Data can be accessed by topic through the Subjects A-Z link. Reports from the Current Population Survey can be found on the CPS page jointly sponsored by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Researchers can use the DataFerret to request categories of records from the Current Population Survey, SIPP, PUMS and other data sets for local analysis using SPSS or other statistical analysis software. The Bureau also runs theAmerican Community Survey, which monitors selected communities between each decennial census, and the Economic Census, which "provides a detailed portrait of the Nation's economy once every five years, from the national to the local level."

 Measuring America offers decennial censuses from 1790 to 2000 in pdf files.
  Past editions of Statistical Abstracts to 1878 have been made available in pdf or zip files.
  View Census of Population and Housing data to 1790 in pdf files. This research support center has data sets from the U.S. Census Bureau pre-formatted
for downloading and use in SPSS or SAS statistical software packages. If you
know what you need, it can provide easy access to very large data sets.
Caution: Some of these sets are hundreds of megabytes in size.
BJS collects data about crime, criminals, victims, law enforcement agencies, courts and corrections. Their home page offers several easy approaches to these statistics. The National Archive of Criminal Justice Data (NACJD) is a searchable database. BJS Publications online lists titles alphabetically and the Sourcebook of Criminal Justice Statistics-1995 offers the familiar clusters of tables.
The U.S. Department of Commerce's central resource for economic news and
trade data. Here you can search the entire National Trade Data Bank, now known
as GLOBUS/NTDB, scan the
Survey of Current
Business as part of the "State of the Nation Library" feature
or the Commerce Business Daily, now known as FedBizOpps,
or review current economic indicators.
The NCES web site provides access to education Publications, Surveys, and Statistics. Some items of particular interest will be the Digest of Education Statistics and the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS).
This site provides historic energy data from 1949, as well as forecasts to 2020 for resources and consumption, as well as financial and environmental indicators.
The mission of NCHS is to provide statistical information that will guide actions and policies to improve the health of the American people. Statistics can be found in the Data Warehouse.

First-time visitors to this site might start with the Programs and Surveys button for an overview of BLS's statistical activities. Another major statistical data resource is the LABSTAT database of labor statistics compiled by BLS. This is a collection of 26 economic and social survey data series. The most requested series include employment and earnings, consumer and producer price indexes, and occupational injury and illness rates.
An extension of Quarterly Workforce Indicators, LEHD is a program within the U.S. Census Bureau. It works to "combine federal and state administrative data on employers and employees with core Census Bureau censuses and surveys while protecting the confidentiality of people and firms that provide the data."
The BTS site provides access to a wide variety of transportation statistics. This information can be accessed through their home page or by using their Search engine.
This website is a product of the Dept. of Health and Human Services to provide data on adolescents. It currently includes a youth profile, reports, and publications from various agencies. It also has links to youth related websites. This site is useful in providing information on crime, drug-use and living conditions of youth.
