The Gory Details: How to Copy Maps

For a fee, Map Collection staff can order you reproductions of materials that cannot be checked out. The fee varies depending on the material and copy method chosen. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide these services for maps that do circulate.

Please consult Map Collection staff (206) 543-9392 or email us at maplib@u.washington.edu to help you decide which format is best for you. The list above refers to the format of the output (the copy), not the original.

IMPORTANT: Each form has a place near the bottom that asks you to state your intended use, so please make sure to fill this out in your own words (don't leave the lines blank) and sign the form before sending it. Copy requests will NOT be processed if this information is not completed.

Large format paper: Black and white copies

Use this method for maps narrower than 36". Maps must not be too fragile to process through the oversize scanner/copier, but maps encased in Mylar are acceptable.

Prices rarely exceed $5 per item before fees. There is a $5 service fee and 15% UW surcharge. For more information about fees and turnaround time see the Campus Engineering Records Pricelist.

Order form: Large Format Reproduction Order (pdf version). Fax it to (206) 685-8049 or mail it to the address listed on the form.

Pick up/mail: Special Collections will mail your copies to you and invoice you, or you can pick them up and pay for services at Special Collections, which is located in the basement of Suzzallo-Allen Libraries. Phone: (206) 543-1929. Email: speccoll@u.washington.edu.

Large format paper: Color copies

The Map Collection does not have an oversized color printer, however our self-service color photocopier can make 11" x 17" copies. Larger items can be copied in multiple sheets and pieced together. As an alternative you can get a scanned copy on CD-ROM which can be taken to the Locke Computer Lab (HS T271) on-campus (or off-campus reprographics companies) for printing on an oversized printer.

Photo negatives or prints: Black and white

Both negatives and prints are available for black and white film, but once you have the negatives it is cheaper to take them to an off-campus photo developer.

Prices: see the CSS price lists.

Transparencies (8½"x11"): Black and white or color

If you want a copy of a whole map on transparencies, copies will be on 8½" x 11" sheets and will not be pieced together for you. If you want a color copy of a portion of a map on transparencies, the order must be accompanied by a black and white 8½" x 11" photocopy showing the area you want copied.

Prices:

The invoice fee is $5 and applies only when invoiced with the material; prepaid orders and payment by credit card are not subject to this fee. If copies are mailed, they are sent First Class and are shipped at cost plus a $5 delivery surcharge.

Large format digital: Black and white or color
