Contingency Serials Cancellation Project 2001
Mathematics Research Library Titles

Journal prices are expected to inflate at a rate of about 12.2%, so we are trying to identify reductions of about 12.2% of the Mathematics Research Library's 1999-2001 biennial serials budget, or about $38,269 in cuts.

We have looked at several categories of publications to achieve a reduction:

  1. Journals with subscriptions which include both print and electronic versions
The UW has agreements with some publishers which allow us to cancel the print, retain campus-wide online access, and save money by going to electronic only. Within this category are the following publishers:

  2. Other unique journals, which have shown relatively low use, low ISI Impact Factors or high cost/use.

To see the list of titles to be cancelled or switched to electronic only, click on: Mathematics Research Journals Cancellation/Conversion List. In consultation with faculty, we have chosen to go with our Plan B. We will cancel the print version of the selected journals where some savings would result from switching to electronic access only. Since this would not save enough to meet our target, combine this with complete cancellation of other titles, selected on the basis of infrequent use, low ISI impact rating, and lack of UW authors or UW citations. This will maintain direct access to as many journals as possible, but may be opposed by those who strongly prefer working with printed journals. Browsing access can be provided via MathSciNet's Browse Current Journals function or via individualized lists from Ingenta/Uncover Reveal service. Contact Martha Tucker for help in setting up a customized alerting. The preliminary cancellation lists were sent to the Libraries' Serials Department on AUGUST 17. The last day for public comments is OCTOBER 12.

To assist in making cancellation decisions, please consider the following questions:

  1. Do you value 24/7 access to journal content from office, home or away ENOUGH to cancel local receipt and housing of paper copies?
  2. Do you prefer to continue local receipt and shelving of paper copies at the expense of having access to more titles or in some cases, instead of electronic access?
  3. Are there any titles under "Cancel Print, Keep Electronic Copy" for which you must have PRINT access?
  4. Are there titles under "Cancel Complete Titles" for which your needs cannot be met via 24-48 hour (subsidized) document delivery?

You should also review and send comments on the complete lists for the library system. Paper copies of science units' lists are in a blue folder on the review table.

Please send any comments to me at mathlib@u.washington.edu.
