The EMC contains some 7,000 moving image and sound recording titles housed on such formats such as 16mm film, VHS, laserdisc, DVD, audio-cassette, and open reel audio tape. The collection includes:
Formerly housed by Classroom Support Services in UW's Kane Hall, the EMC is now cared for by the University Libraries Media Center. Due to preservation concerns, the 16mm films in the EMC are no longer available for screening in their original format. If you are a UW instructor or student who wishes to access one of these titles, please follow these instructions. Parts of this collection may be available to users outside of the University of Washington via ILL.
As with its other media, the Media Center restricts lending of the EMC to University Library and Summit borrowers. Due to the uniqueness or fragility of certain titles, some titles may be restricted to "Library Use Only." Due to the fragility of the 16mm films, in particular, these items will no longer be available for viewing via their original format. However, the Media Center seeks out and acquires, if possible, copies of select 16mm films on DVD or VHS. Selective reformatting of orphan and unique works is also taking place. Please contact the Media Center with questions about viewing the EMC's 16mm film content.
Requests for material from the Milo Ryan Phonoarchive (KIRO-CBS collection of broadcasts from the World War II years and after) should be directed to mopix@nara.gov. The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) owns the original recordings and makes access copies so long as permission is granted by KIRO-CBS. The EMC web site will remain active until all of the EMC titles are processed. The processing, locating, and reformatting of the titles will be done over time and upon request.
