Background Sources

Subject encyclopedias can be a quick way to get an overview of a topic, how it has been researched and sometimes who has done that research. Encyclopedia articles often include a bibliography of resources that can jumpstart your search for materials. Search the UW Libraries Catalog to find an appropriate encyclopedia - or talk with a reference librarian. Other printed and online resources often also have background information.

Finding Scholarly Articles

To find academic journal articles that are applicable to the subject you are studying, consider whether you want to use a general (broad) database or one of the more specific ones. Link directly to Research Databases or under Resources by Subject (for example, Biology). Using concepts, synonyms, as well as Boolean AND's and OR's, maximizes getting better retrievals.

Not finding anything useful?

If you get stuck looking for information Ask a Reference Librarian for more suggestions in person, on the phone, or using our 24/7 chat service. Librarians can help you with your search strategy, suggest additional places to look for information, and show you tricks for getting more out of the databases you search. Bring your assignment sheets and/or your textbook when you come talk to us--we might be experts in research, but we'll need input from you, too.
