"The best comprehensive survey of Thailand as of the early twentieth century. Originally written in 1912, expanded in later editions, and still germane. Volume 1 includes chapters on geography, history, social organization, ethnic groups, education, language and literature. Volume II deals with industry, commerce, communications, art and religion. Well indexed and well-informed. Generous in its interpretation of the reign of Chulalongkorn's immediate successor" (Thrombley & Siffin, 1972).

In this article, Griswold discusses various modes of transcription used for the romanization of Thai. He advocates the use of one of two systems, what he calls the "Graphic" system and the "Commonsense" system, the choice of system being determined by what it is that is being transcribed. The graphic system, which preserves the spelling of the Thai words by utilizing Sanskrit equivalents of Thai letters, is favored, he says, when "transcribing inscriptions--most of which are sprinkled with Sanskrit and Pali words" (p. 36). His proposed commonsense system, however, has not been adopted, partially because of typesetting difficulties. The preferred system for transcribing Thai according to the pronunciation of Thai words (what Griswold calls a phonetic system) is one first developed by the Royal Institute of Thailand and adapted by the Library of Congress.

Reprint of articles originally appearing in the Journal of the Siam Society, This collection of studies contains photographs, transcriptions into Thai and romanized script, and translations into English of the Sukhodayan inscriptions (nos. 1-15, 38, 40, 45, 46, 49, 93 plus two never before translated) and several inscriptions from northern Thailand (no. 44 and one in Mon not previously published). In addition, these inscriptions are interpreted in the light of other historical data, studies of archaeological remains, and previous studies. A translation of a northern Thai palm leaf manuscript is also given. Taken together, these studies provide the major source for anyone interested in the history of Thailand from the early 13th century until the mid-15th century and in the emergence of the first Thai states.
