Kachorn compares passgaes in the two northern Thai chronicles, "Story of the town Suvarna-Khome-Kham," and "Story of Prince Singhanawati," with accounts in the Chinese Man Shu to conclude that the topynym K'unlun that appears in Chinese sources refers to the Kingdom of the K'rom which was probably "Land" and "Water" Chenla.

Describes a central Thai village close to the "Cornell village" of Bang Chan before the rapid changes of the 1960s and 1970s. This work has long been cited, since it was first published as one of the most significant ethnographic sources on Thai rural life. While it must be viewed in the context of ethnographic research carried out subsequently, particularly in other parts of the country, it still remains a good source of information on the society and culture of a rural central Thai village at a point in time before rural society underwent radical changes. Particularly good on the role of Buddhism in rural Central Thai society.

Although this work treats mainland Southeast Asia in general, it provides a particularly good overview and guide to studies on Thai culture and society, and particularly on the culture and society of the peoples who live in the rural areas. It also provides some introduction to the research which has been undertaken about urban life in Thailand. Ch. 3, "Rural Life in Therav da Buddhist Societies," provides discussion of patterns of social organization and culture in rural Thailand as well as in Laos, Burma, and Cambodia. Ch. 5, "Cities in Changing Societies in Mainland Southeast Asia," summarizes findings from the few available studies on urban life in Thailand.

Keyes, Charles F., ed. 1979. Ethnic Adaptation and Identity: The Karen on the Thai Frontier with Burma. Philadelphia: ISHI.

*

Concerns the largest tribal population in Thailand and situates the Karen within the context of Thai history and contemporary political-economy. Contains papers by various anthropologists who had carried out research among Karen in Thailand (and, in the case of Lehman, Burma as well) in the 1960s. The papers center on the issue of the relationship of the Karen to the larger (Thai and Burmese) societies in which they live. Continues a line of thought first developed by Leach in Political Systems of Highland Burma.

These two papers offer an interpretation of the traditional "culture of gender" in Thailand, with particular reference to northern and northeastern Thailand. Argues that males and females are conceived of in popular Buddhist thought as having different psychological natures which, in turn, leads to different ways for males and females to follow the religious teachings of the Buddha. The thesis offered is controversial, as can be seen in Kirsch's riposte to the first of these papers.

The village of Ku Daeng, a community near Chiang Mai, was first studied by Konrad Kingshill in the 1950s, restudied by him in the mid-1960s, and again (although not identified as such) by Jack and Sulamith Potter (see Thai Peasant Social Structure by Jack Potter and Family Life in a Northern Thai Village, by Sulamith Heins Potter) in the mid-1970s. This work, although theoretically quite limited, still contains valuable, ethnographic descriptions of rural life in northern Thailand. Taken together, the works by Kingshill and the Potters provide some understanding of the changes villages in this areas went through over a twenty year period.

An interpretation of Thai religion which argues that Thai religion should be seen as "syncretic," consisting not only of Buddhist elements, but also of Brahmanistic and animistic elements as well, with Buddhism providing the basic framework into which the others are articulated. "Thailand has experienced a remarkable revolution in reproductive behavior during recent years, resulting in a rapidly declining fertility rate.. The authors, leading experts on Thailand's social demography, follow an unusual approach that combines qualitative and quantiative m,ethods to explore the reasons for this decline. Their work makes possible a thorough understanding, in demographic, socioeconomic, and cultural terms, of a phenomeonon of critical importance to Third World population trends and development." Nearly half of this work consists of essays about adaptation of minority groups (Thai-Lue, Haw Chinese, Yao, Lua or Lawa, and Karen) to Thai society, and about government programs (Thai Mobile Development Unit Program, Hill Tribe Program of the Public Welfare Department, and the Tribal Research Center in Chiang Mai) directed at such peoples in the early 1960s. The introduction to the Thailand section (by Peter Kunstadter) contains useful statistical summaries on ethnic group composition of Thailand.

"Seven papers in this two-volume work are onThailand. Four deal with specific Thai ethnic groups: Michael Moerman on Thai-Lue views of central government; F. S. Mote on Haw (Yunnanese Chinese) immigrants as agents of social change; Peter Kandre on Yao (Iu Mien) social systems and relations with outsiders; and Peter Kunstadter on Lua and Karen adaptation to hill and valley life. Three papers (by Lee W.Huff, Hans Manndorff, and William R.Geddes) outline Thai governmental policies and programs dealing with these ethnic minorities. An introductory chapter by Kunstadter and chapter bibliographies provide very useful information concerning sources of research materialll" (Trombley & Siffin, p. 117).
