ABSTRACT

With the passing of the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China, women's issues in Asia have moved increasingly to the forefront. One such issue, abortion, continues to generate controversy as many women argue for protection and/or recognition of their reproductive rights. The objectives of this paper are threefold: (1) To examine the abortion debate in Thailand, identifying issues raised by Thai feminist scholars about the status of women; (2) To overview some of the more prominent feminist arguments regarding abortion (particularly those written by Canadian and American scholars) as a tool for defining women's reproductive rights; (3) To focus on a study of attitudes toward abortion among health care personnel and post-induced abortion patients in Bangkok, Thailand in order to discern the degree of support (if any) for feminist abortion arguments.

The author, Duncan McCargo, d.j.mccargo@leeds.ac.uk , 05/01/98: An account of recent developments in Thai politics. Since the early 1980s, Thailand's politics have changed immensely. Dramatic events, such as the 1991 military coup and the popular anti-military uprising of May 1992, have challenged conventional views of the Thai political order. The armed forces can no longer take their traditional dominance for granted. The military and the bureaucracy are under threat from new sources of power from dissident religious movements, local politicians in Bangkok, the opposition, NGOs, and a critical mass media.

Chamlong Srimuang, a former general who served for six years as Governor of Bangkok and later became leader of the Palang Dharma Party and deputy prime minister, is one of Thailand's most controversial politicians. A celibate and vegetarian with no worldly possessions, he is best known for spearheading the mass protest which ousted military strongman Suchinda Kraprayoon from the premiership in 1992. This book examines his career.

Chapter 1: Introduction; Chapter 2: Professional soldiers and political soldiers; Chapter 3: Moral force: the politics of Buddhism; Chapter 4: Local power in the Thai capital; Chapter 5: More than a faction, less than a party; Chapter 5: In search of an indigenous Thai ideology; Chapter 7: The marketing of a Thai political personality; Chapter 8: The crisis of Black May: no winners, only losers; Chapter 9: Decline and fall?

This is the only single-authored, research-based book on contemporary Thai politics currently available, so I think it is well worth buying. Chamlong's political career is a fascinating story; I hope the book sometimes reads more like a novel than another turgid work of political 'science'.

A village study of a Tai-Lue village in Chiang Rai, Northern Thailand. Considers how villagers in a community in far northern Thailand confronted economic and technological change in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Focuses on the transformation of village agriculture as new technology, especially tractor-plowing, has been introduced. One of the best village studies made in Thailand. Particularly good for its treatment of how villagers confront changing economic and ethnological circumstances, and for the awareness which the author shows about the tension between the perspective which villages have on their own actions and the perspective which he, as an outsider has. Practically the only detailed study of agrarian change in modern Thai society.

This article has been very influential in that for some time it was required reading for all members of the United States Operations Mission to Thailand. It has served as a general introduction to the Thai social system and to the structure of the Thai bureaucratic elite. Stimulating thought the article is, it lacks historical perspective and tends to reify Buddhist values as derived from doctrinal sources rather than from observed behavior. Nevertheless, the article still deserves to be read.
