A detailed analysis of a "farmers' association" in Kalasin province, northeastern Thailand. Farmers' Associations were originally set up in 1972 by the Thai government Department of Agricultural Extension and Department of Local Administration to "mobilize" northeastern peasants to counter Communist-led insurgency. While most such associations have proven ineffectual, Pattana shows how in the case he studied, using ethnographic field methods, local people "modified" the farmers' association and have made in work for their economic ends rather than for the government's political ones. He shows that this modification was a consequence of changes among rural people, including better education and greater sophistication about the market and the state, "charismatic" leadership provided by one local man, and influence of NGOs.

This study, based on research in the "Cornell Village" of Bang Chan, concludes that Thai peasants "are people who for their own distinctive pyschocultural reasons--their Buddhist ethos, their child-rearing practices, their loose and simple social system--have heightened [an] essential human need to be left alone." This thesis has not been sustained in studies carried out in villages in most other parts of Thailand and most probably reflects the rather unusual anomic character of some central Thai villages.

Piker adopts a similar approach to the study of Thai village religion as that taken by Spiro in his studies of Burmese religion. Piker argues that Thai village religious belief, and particularly "animistic" beliefs, whatever their historic origin, correspond to orientations to the mundane world because "the ontogenesis of Thai peasant personality. gives general content and structures both to definitions of mundane, interpersonal situations and to orientations, to the world of the supernatural."

Based on researches in a village in northern Thailand carried out in early 1970s. The book serves as a medium for a polemic against the "loosely structured social system" "school" of Thai studies. Although this book is presented as advancing a new paradigm for the study of Thai rural society to replace what is taken as the dominant "loosely structured social system school" of Thai studies, its value actually lies in the ethnographic analysis it provides of a northern Thai village, one previously studied by Kingshill (Ku Daeng).

Emphasis on "less dominant oppositional forcees" -- i.e., Communist Party of Thailand, workers, students, and parliament. "Special attention is given to the transitional role of these oppositional forces during and after the dramatic shifts in Thai politics precipitated by the student revolution of 1973, the military coup of 1976, the increased hostilities between China and Vietnam in 1979, and the abortive coup by the "Young Turk" military faction in 1981." (from prospectus) Is not as informative or as incisive as a number of other recent works and seems unaware of much of this work.

The Three Worlds According to King Ruang was written in the fourteenth century by a Thai prince and became the major source for popular Buddhist cosmological ideas not only among Thai but also among other Southeast Asian Buddhists. The worldview based on this Buddhist cosmology was dominant in Thailand until the end of the nineteenth century and still remains significant for many sectors of the population in Thailand.
