Subject: CKS conference - Rethinking Mainland Southeast Asia: Comparing Social and Cultural Challenges

International Conference

Rethinking Mainland Southeast Asia: Comparing Social and Cultural
Challenges

Center for Khmer Studies
Siem Reap, 25-27 February 2006

Building on the first and second sessions of the Rockefeller Foundation-funded CKS capacity-building courses on Contemporary Southeast Asia and Cultures and Identities of Mainland Southeast Asia (February 2005 to January 2006), this conference will provide a forum in which early career Cambodian academics can present their research alongside international scholars with related interests.

The emphasis will be on developing comparisons between Cambodia and other countries in Southeast Asia. These comparisons may be presented within individual papers, or through panel sessions.

Likely panels will include

* Cambodia and its neighbors: relations with Thailand and Vietnam
* Economic development initiatives: alternative approaches
* Reforming education: problems and solutions
* Buddhism in the 21st century: temples and practitioners
* Changing gender roles and identities
* How tourism affects local culture and identities in mainland
Southeast Asia
* Cultural expression through performance arts in Mainland Southeast
Asia
* National cultures

The conference will involve early career Cambodian academics from the CKS program, and up to twenty-five other presenters. The duration will be three days. It will run in collaboration with partner universities in Cambodia.

Scholars based in Southeast Asia are especially encouraged to participate, and some limited funding may be available to support their attendance.

CKS hopes to disseminate selected papers through its website or print publication.

Please submit titles, short abstracts and contact details to cheanmen@khmerstudies.org by November 15, 2005.
