Workshop of Young Scholars from the Global South (WYSGS)
The Graduate Institute of International Studies is an internationally reputed advanced school of teaching and research in the field of international studies.

The Institute plans to hold its first workshop for outstanding young scholars from the Global South (i.e. countries belonging to the former 'third world') specializing in the study of international relations, broadly defined, mainly from the perspectives of history, political science, law, and economics. The aim of the workshop is to help incubate a network of young scholars from southern countries by providing them opportunities to interact and share experiences with fellow scholars from the south, and develop collaborative frameworks and projects.
Candidates will typically be nearing completion of their Ph.ds at a southern university. Exceptionally fresh Ph.ds from southern universities working in the region may be considered. Selection will be based on the quality of the applicant's research. Quality being equal, selection may be guided by the objective of promoting the workshop's thematic coherence.
Selected participants will be expected to present their research at the workshop, which will also include presentations by Institute and guest faculty. English will be the working language.
The workshop will take place this year from 9-16 October 2005. The Institute will cover return excursion fares, accommodation, and a contribution towards expenses. Interested candidates satisfying the above criteria may e-mail a letter of self-introduction and motivation, attaching a detailed CV with contact details of two referees and a 2000-word summary of the Ph.d. project, to southworkshop@hei.unige.ch by 15 June 2005.
