Subject: Re: Conference: Invitation to join/form panels
The Texas Tech Center for Viet Nam has sent out its call for papers
for its Fifth Triennial conference March 17-19th, 2005. It marks the
40th
anniversary of the Americanization of its war there, the 30th of its
end, and the 10th of normalization of Vietnamese and American relations.
This conference seeks to expand its panels to focus "Beyond the
War, " that is to the culture and people of Viet Nam, but that
will not happen
without our continued presence. Keith Taylor and I have had a good time
there. David Marr was surprised at the welcome he received there a
couple of years ago (given the region's political affinities and world
view). But scholars of Viet Nam need to expand their footprint there.
And you can visit Buddy Holly's grave!
Panels on post-war literature in Viet Nam, Vietnamese diaspora studies,
etc. anyone?
I have drifted into some cultural comparisons between U. S. intervention
in Afghanistan (where I once did some fieldwork), Iraq and Viet Nam
and will chair a panel on that topic. Papers wanted! If, for example,
anyone wishes to explore more fully the Vietnamese response to the war
in Iraq that made for such interesting information being exchanged on
the Listserv, please let me know if you would like to join this panel!
