Going with the Past:
Vietnamese Traditional Culture in Contemporary Society
The Center for Vietnamese Philosophy, Culture and Society at Temple University in Philadelphia is planning a conference for October 6-7 2006, in cooperation with the Institute of Culture and Information, part of the Ministry of Culture and Information. The theme of the conference will be the co-existence of traditional and modern culture in Vietnam, and efforts to preserve, develop and understand the legacy of the past.
As is well known, Vietnam has seen a revival and growth of traditional festivals and beliefs in recent years. The participants in this conference will examine the actors and forces which are playing a role in this phenomenon, and what it says about contemporary Vietnamese society. One of the questions that will frame the conference is the following: what are the roles of the State; local, societal and transnational forces (media, international tourism, international funding, etc.) in the reproduction and transformation of culture? The major topics to be addressed in the presentations are:
1) The policies of the State towards traditional culture in Vietnam;
2) Traditional culture in development: research approaches on traditional culture in Vietnam;
3) Specific case studies on the preservation and management of traditional culture;
4) The role of traditional philosophies and beliefs in contemporary Vietnam.
Our speakers will include Professor Peter Zinoman from the University of California at Berkeley, Professor Hy Van Luong, from the University of Toronto, and Professor Nguyen Chi Ben from the Institute of Culture and Information in Hanoi.
We encourage prospective participants to submit one-page abstracts (around 500 words) by August 1, 2006. We will inform participants of their selection by the middle of August. Please e-mail your abstract to giaovu@temple.edu. More information will be appearing on our website in due course: <www.temple.edu/vietnamese_center>.
