PhD workshop on Property, Dispossession and Rural Exclusion
May 25-27, 2011
Roskilde, Denmark
Organizers: Christian Lund (Roskilde University) and Thomas Sikor (University of East Anglia)
Property is as much about dispossession as about possession. Dispossession occurs in many ways, not limited to the redistribution of ownership titles via the state or market. Dispossession may also arise from changes in the nature of property relationships, such as the formalization of land tenure, or the emergence of new property objects, such as crop genetic resources.
This research-training workshop seeks to examine key processes of dispossession in developing societies. In addition, we want to explore how dispossession connects with broader processes of rural exclusion and inclusion shaping access to valuable goods, participation in political decision-making and recognition of particular identities. We are particularly interested in processes taking on a global quality, such as foreign farm land investments– also referred to as the global land grab– and transnational agrarian movements, for example around farmers’ rights to seed.
