VIETNAM IN THE COLD WAR: NEW PERSPECTIVES AND SOURCES

4-5 April 2011, Honolulu campus of Hawai'i Pacific University

Organized by the History Department at Hawaii Pacific University (HPU), this two-day workshop seeks to bring together experts from the United States and elsewhere to discuss the latest scholarship and source material on Vietnam’s Cold War experiences. Formal panel sessions will consider the end of the colonial era, the domestic and foreign policies of the two Vietnams, the American War, and the postwar era. An informal roundtable discussion will address the state of the field, as well as new or revealing archival and other evidence from Vietnam and elsewhere.

The meeting will be held on 4-5 April 2011, immediately after the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) annual conference (31 March-3 April), at the downtown Honolulu campus of HPU located 1½ miles from the Hilton Hawaiian Village, the AAS conference venue.

Workshop participants will also be invited to attend a social event at Murphy’s Bar & Grill on Monday evening, and have the opportunity to partake in a guided visit of Iolani Palace (the residence of Hawaii’s last monarch) and a walking tour of Chinatown/the Art District.

Presentation proposals (100-200 words) should be sent to Dr. Pierre Asselin (passelin@hpu.edu) before 1 November. Notifications of acceptance will be sent on or before 10 November. Those interested in attending only should contact Dr. Asselin at their earliest convenience.
