Subject: [Vsg] position announcement: modern transnational history
The Department of Historical Studies at the University of Toronto at
Mississauga and the tricampus Centre for Diaspora and Transnational Studies
invite applications for an Assistant Professor position in modern
transnational history, specializing in the formation of East Asian and/or
South Asian diasporas. The Department and the Centre seek an innovative
scholar with demonstrated excellence in historical approaches to modern global
processes and the formation of diasporic communities. Candidates must be
highly proficient in one or more of the pertinent East or South Asian
languages other than English, and engaged with primary sources. In addition to
excellence in teaching and research, the successful applicant should share the
Department's and the Centre's commitment to transdisciplinary historical
inquiry. The selected candidate will be expected to contribute to a tricampus
undergraduate program in Diaspora and Transnational Studies and to a research-
intensive doctoral program in the Graduate Department of History on the St.
George Campus of the University of Toronto.
The appointment will begin January 1, 2007; an appropriate doctoral degree
must have been earned by that date. Salary will be commensurate with
qualifications and experience. Applications should include: a cover letter, a

hopes to begin interviewing candidates in October; the formal deadline for
