SIT Study Abroad is pleased to announce that we, through the generosity of
the Freeman Foundation, will offer an Access Asia faculty development trip
to Viet Nam in summer 2007. Hosted at the site of our SIT program in Can
Tho and utilizing the resources and facilities of our semester program
Mekong Delta: Natural and Cultural Ecology, this trip will focus on
environmental issues in Southeast Asia and is for faculty wishing to pursue
research and teaching interests in this area. It will also give participants
the chance to interact with SIT program faculty, staff, and students and to
learn more about the SIT Study Abroad experience.
Access Asia: Viet Nam is designed to enable individual faculty to
incorporate some aspect of the natural and cultural ecology of the Mekong
Delta into their work, with the larger goal of promoting Southeast Asian
studies within the U.S. undergraduate curriculum and increasing student
awareness of this non-traditional study abroad locale. Participants will
receive an overview of the environment of the Mekong Delta and its people
during eight days of lectures, field-site visits, meetings, and short
excursions conducted by Can Tho University faculty, local experts, and SIT
staff in Can Tho and the surrounding delta region. Particular attention will
be paid to wetlands and mangrove ecology, and the challenges and
opportunities associated with protecting the delta ecosystem in the context
of an intensely cultivated and densely settled landscape.
The program will include the chance to observe SIT Study Abroad spring
semester student presentations of their Independent Study Projects and some
free time to pursue individual interests, including exploring Ho Chi Minh City. It is our hope that during the trip, faculty will be able to make
important connections and personal contacts and benefit from SIT's extensive
network of resources in Viet Nam.

Tentative program dates, exclusive of travel time, are May 21-31, 2007.
International airfare, accommodations, and most meals will be covered from
the point of group departure from the U.S. Participants will be expected to
cover their own expenses from home to and from the group departure point, as
well as costs for a visa and any immunizations.
If you wish to be considered for Access Asia: Viet Nam, please submit a
letter of interest to SIT by December 1, 2006. Your letter should include
. Your departmental/institutional affiliation, as well as a brief
statement of academic background, experience, and disciplinary interest;
. An explanation of your interest in environmental issues in Southeast
Asia, including how you plan to incorporate this experience into your
teaching and research;
. Information about your institution's, and your own, involvement with
Asian Studies and with study abroad, and some indication of how you would
use this experience to promote study abroad upon your return.
