Subject: colonial census data for Nghe-Tinh

Friends, Although I know this has passed through the forum a few times, could someone please tell me precisely where to find census data for colonial Indochina, specifically Nghe-Tinh? I am interested in the micro level data (household or village surveys) if available.

Best, thanks in advance.

Dear David,

That will be a hell of a job. The colonial census of Indochina (or in this case northern Annam)is not known for grass-root data (for a good discussion see Ng Shui Meng, 1974). The Annuaire Statistique de lIndochine and the B.E.I. might be of help here. The Centre no. 1 in Hanoi has not that fine collection of canton and village records I was able to consult for northern provinces of Tonkin. The Guernut Commission hasn't extended (at least to my knowledge) questionaires for northern Annam except Thua Thien. They received Cahiers des Doleances (organised by among others the PCI)Local data based on records dealing with the Nghe-Tinh Xo Viet might contain census data. Did you check with Yves Henry? Many years ago, when I did my study on Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh, the archives in Aix en Saigon didn't produce much about colonial central Vietnam. Again, I am talking about the eighties.

Good luck,
John Kleinen
