The University of Washington Libraries currently has over 2,300 books written by or about American Indians in our Historical, Children's Literature, and Pacific Northwest collections, with a sprinkling of titles in the Curriculum Materials,
Suzzallo/Allen Stacks, and other locations throughout the system. You can find
these materials in the Libraries' catalog by doing a Keyword search for
the phrase "American Indian Children's and Young Adult Material"
In 1999, Betsy Battle Hobbs donated 1,123 volumes of American Indian Children's
books to the UW Libraries. These titles, coupled with existing resources
in our Children's Literature, Historical Children's Literature, Curriculum,
and Pacific Northwest collections, provide our region with an impressive
resource for scholars, researchers and students interested in tracing
the development of this body of literature for American children, especially
through the decades of the twentieth century.
Most
of these materials, all published before 1970, are out of print and not
readily available. For details on the effort to document this collection, see Anne Bingham, "Building a Collection
of American Indian Children’s Literature
at the University of Washington Libraries," Technical Services Quarterly, Vol. 22(1) 2004. |
