"For here forlorn and lost I tread" the gender differences between captivity narratives of men and women from 1528 to 1886 / The captivity narrative itself changed over time, depending on the audience and the mood of the times. Women moved from being stoic, Puritan women, through the Amazon stage of the American Revolution, to the Victorian Age and its vision of women as delicate and frail. The narratives can tell scholars much about a past way of life, and how men and women were viewed through the centuries |

"If you haven't made somebody angry, you haven't done something right" Larry Kramer's outsider persona / This study offers an exploration of Larry Kramer's outsider persona, and how that persona affected both his writings as well as public perception of the author. A critical analysis of Faggots, several activist texts from the Reagan administration, and The normal heart provide the case studies from which I analyze Kramer's persona/s/. This thesis analyzes these works and is informed by deconstructive terms, particularly those of Paul de Man and Jacques Derrida. In addition, Philip Auslander's notion of persona provides the definition of a term that is continually explored in each of the three chapters. The outcome of this text is not whether Kramer has an outsider persona, but how that persona developed and became a permanent feature of his writings and public appearance. In the conclusion of this study I show through recent writings how Kramer's persona and the public's response to his words still are relevant today |

"There is evil there that does not sleep--" the construction of evil in American popular cinema from 1989 to 2002 / In The lord of the rings: the fellowship of the ring, Boromir refers to the lands of Mordor as the place where evil never sleeps. Cinematic evil itself never sleeps, always arising in new forms, to the extent that there exist as many types of evil as there are films. This thesis examines this constantly shifting construction of evil in American popular cinema between 1989 and 2002--roughly, the period between the fall of the Berlin Wall and the attack on the World Trade Center--and how this cinema engaged with representations of enemies and of evil per se. The thesis uses content and thematic analysis on a sample of the 201 most successful films at the U.S. box office during the period. In these films, cinematic evil is constructed according to a visual aesthetic that attempts to engage with societal values, but fails to do so due to the emphasis on its visual construction and its commodification. As Baudrillard argues, evil has become a hollow concept devoid of meaning, and this is especially so for cinematic evil. It is recognised, and is recognisable, by the visual excessiveness of its violence (or potentiality for violence), and by certain codes that are created in reference to intertextual patterns and in relationship to discourses of paranoia and malaise. But cinema in this period failed to engage with the concept of evil itself in any meaningful way. Cinematic evil mirrors the descent into the chaos and disorder of a postmodern society. All cinematic evil can do is to connect with this sense of unease in which the "reality of evil" cannot be represented. Instead, it draws on earlier icons and narratives of evil in a conflation of narrative and spectacle that produces a cinema of nostalgia. Moreover, stripped of narrative causality, these films express a belief, unproved and unprovable, that evil things and evil people may arise in any form, in any place and at any time: a cinema of paranoia. Together, these factors produce a cinema of malaise, perpetually confronting an evil it is unable to define or locate |

120-- oops-- 66 questions & answers about the Holocaust Nizkor's response to the Institute for Historical Review & Ernst Zundel The Institute for Historical Review (IHR) publishes many small pamphlets designed to misinform people about the Holocaust. One of the most persistent has been a pamphlet called "66 Questions and Answers on the Holocaust." The pamphlet neatly summarizes many of the most common arguments used by Holocaust deniers. Refuting these 66 claims strikes directly at the core of Holocaust denial. This website contains a point-by-point refutation of the pamphlet's half-truths and untruths. The full text of the original pamphlet is included, with the IHR's questions and answers reproduced unaltered, followed by the refutations |

Baghdad burning girl blog from Iraq-- let's talk war, politics, and occupation / Presents the Internet blog entries of a young Iraqi woman living in Baghdad as she chronicles the hardships and complexities of daily life and the intricacies of the political situation during the first year of the Iraqi 2003 invasion and the subsequent occupation. In August 2003, the world gained access to a remarkable new voice: a blog written by a 25-year-old Iraqi woman living in Baghdad, whose identity remains concealed for her own protection. Calling herself Riverbend, she offers searing eyewitness accounts of the everyday realities on the ground, punctuated by astute analysis on the politics behind events. In a voice in turn eloquent, angry, reflective, and darkly comic, Riverbend recounts stories of life in an occupied city of neighbors whose homes are raided by U.S. troops, whose relatives disappear into prisons and whose children are kidnapped by money-hungry militias |

Bolles collection on the history of London the collection of Edwin C. Bolles on the history of London from its founding to the 19th century "Edwin C. Bolles, professor of English at Tufts College (now Tufts University) in the late 19th century, assembled a substantial focused collection of materials on Victorian London. These materials include not only conventional print sources but many pieces that are unique or quite rare: folio descriptions of the city from limited print runs, contemporary 19th century maps in various shapes and formats, illustrations and prints from the 17th through the 19th century, that capture a precious (and now largely forgotten) record of how the British represented this city. The digital archive represents a comprehensive and integrated collection of sources and resources on the history and topography of London. Texts, images, and maps in the Bolles collection are all interconnected. Together they form a body of material, heterogeneous in form, but homogeneous in theme, that transcends the limits of print publication and exploits the flexibility of the electronic medium. The digitized maps are linked to each other, to relevant source texts, and to illustrations of the locations as they appeared a the time or at present. Similarly, the texts are linked to the maps and the images, and so on"--"More about this collection" screen |

complexities of farce with a case study on Fawlty Towers / Integral to the thesis is a study on laughter. Various laughter theories will be studied in relation to Fawlty Towers to establish that, like farce, laughter is also a complicated subject matter worthy of study. Through association, farce is shown to be even more complex. The thesis concludes with an analysis of the Fawlty Towers performance text to illustrate farce's multifaceted nature, and that it can, and should, be taken "seriously." The series' "closed world" will be examined to discover how it ideally suits the farcical paradigm. Then, using Victorian beliefs and ethics as a contextual base, I explore how farce parodies this outdated value system as it is played out anachronistically through the character of Basil Fawlty. The thesis terminates with a brief conclusion summing up what was analyzed, while affirming that the premise proposed in the introduction has been achieved |

Deconstructing the racialisation experience of Asian Australians process, impact, and response / In addition, the study demonstrates how Asian Australians cope with the stress of their everyday racialisation by drawing from their personal repertoire of discursive, cognitive and behavioural strategies. These, in combination with outside support mechanisms, make up what can be termed "everyday anti-racism" strategies. Racialisation provides valuable insights into when, how and why racialised subjects deploy these different strategies to negotiate, contest and bridge the constraints and boundaries imposed on them. The study offers an integrated model for understanding racialisation experience and lays the foundation for developing further the concepts of "everyday racialisation" and "everyday antiracism." |

Deconstructing the representation of AIDS in poetry In poetry written about AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), the contraction of the disease is continually divulged by explaining to which group the poet, as speaking subject, or the subject, as the individual about whom the poem is written, belongs. A homosexual, as subject or speaking subject in AIDS poetry, confesses the means of contraction of HIV to be gay sex. An intravenous drug abuser, as subject or speaking subject in AIDS poetry, confesses the sharing of syringes as the means of contraction. The subject or speaking subject's position within a socially-defined community or an identity group continually reaffirms the belief that AIDS only affects certain already-marginalized groups. Read individually, poems about AIDS continually marginalize the experience of those infected by failing to acknowledge the universality of AIDS from which, as Jacques Derrida explains, "no human is ever safe" (Derrida, 20). In my thesis, I will argue that the poetic representation of AIDS is informed by identity issues that resist universalizing the experience of AIDS |

elusive dream multiracial harmony in Fiji, 1970-2000 / While Stephanie Lawson, Peter Larmour, Futa Helu, and others have made some important contribution to this debate, my thesis will focus on an argument put forward by Michael Goldsmith on the role of the opposition, making a distinction between two kinds of position, "confrontational" and "thoughtful." This thesis contends that the Westminster system that Fiji adopted at independence failed to bring integration in part because the National Federation Party (NFP) degenerated over the years from a "thoughtful" and effective opposition to a "confrontational," ethnic opposition |

Falungong, Religion, Sekte oder Kult? eine Heilsgemeinschaft als Manifestation von Modernisierungsproblemen und sozialen Entfremdungsprozessen / This paper discusses the ideological contents, and the social background of Falungong, a sect suppressed and persecuted by the Chinese state since several years. It focuses not on violations of human rights and torture of sect members, but tries to identify the character and features of Falungong. Therefore, it particularly analyses the teachings of Li Hongzhi, its founder and master. Moreover, sects like Falungong and their suppression have to be comprehended from a historical perspective that suppressed religion and religious movements in the case that they challenged the state. The problems that arose during the processes of modernization and social change and the reaction from parts of the population (e.g. religious revival) have to be understand in the context of developments in recent years |

Historic heritage thematic frameworks : their use as tools for management and interpretation / A thematic framework is a device that helps conceptualise history and place sites, people and events in their historical contexts. It has been suggested that management and interpretation systems for historic heritage in the New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC) would be substantially improved by the adoption of an effective thematic framework. This paper investigates the use and effectiveness of thematic frameworks in the USA, Canada and Australia, and examines how they are used in selecting and managing a "representative" range of historic heritage sites in these countries. Previous attempts by heritage management bodies to adopt and use thematic frameworks in New Zealand are briefly outlined. Potential problems that may arise from the adoption of models developed in other countries are discussed, along with lessons learnt from previous local applications of thematic schemes. This study found limited evidence of how effective thematic frameworks have been in achieving their stated goals, but does recommend that DOC should adopt a thematic framework for historic heritage. However, DOC needs to be aware of the limitations of such a framework. Any framework adopted needs to be a flexible tool that is used in conjunction with other management and interpretation methods |

Identifying outstanding talent in American Indian and Alaska Native students / This report reviews and synthesizes the most promising practices used to identify exceptionally talented students from the Native American population. Preliminary information includes an Indian Student Bill of Rights, discussion of the problem of talent identification, and discussion of special issues including diversity within the Native American population and cultural assimilation versus accommodation. Eight principles of identification are then presented. These include, among others, using assessments that go beyond a narrow conception of talent; using appropriate instruments with underserved populations; and using a multiple-measure/multiple-criteria approach to identification. Specific practices are then considered, which address: balancing the ideal and the practical; deciding on a concept of talent; recognizing the issues of a particular school; identifying traits that may influence manifestations of talent; recognizing behaviors that distinguish some Native American students from the general population; looking for manifestations of talent potential, alternative behaviors, situations, and interpretations; selecting and constructing appropriate assessment tools; and using the collected student data to make decisions. Recommendations address technical assistance, professional development, assessment portfolios, experimental programs, and program funding. Five appendices include technical information concerning evaluation measures, two sample case studies, and a list of assessment instruments |

Increasing public engagement with historic heritage : a social marketing approach / This project was undertaken to help meet the Department of Conservation's (DOC's) goal of increasing the value of historic heritage among the New Zealand public. It includes the development of goals, objectives, and advice for designing and implementing a social marketing intervention (the application of commercial marketing techniques to a social issue). Social marketing is used to influence behavioural change through interventions such as media campaigns and/or provision of information or services. To develop the advice, a literature review was undertaken, programme planning processes were applied, and key DOC staff were consulted through workshops. The literature review showed that limited research of relevance to New Zealand has been undertaken to date. However, there are indications that New Zealanders tend to lack engagement with historic heritage, despite viewing it as important. Therefore, a two-tiered approach for delivering the social marketing intervention is recommended. First, community planning approaches would be used to engage communities. Individuals in those communities would then be supported to become better engaged with their historic heritage. Achievement of the recommended goal of "increasing engagement with historic heritage" can be measured through changes in specific behaviours that reflect five key elements of heritage value: historic, cultural, physical, aesthetic, and social. It is suggested that a social marketing intervention is piloted in a specific geographic community to assess its usefulness using a community-based approach in a particular context |

Is New Zealand the right choice? the psychological and social factors influencing the decision for German immigrants to New Zealand to stay in New Zealand or to return to Germany / The processes that underpin decisions to migrate, decisions to remain, and decisions to return are discussed. The most important psychosocial process influencing the experiences of German immigrants to New Zealand was "Living the Dream." The migration process presented many different and substantial challenges simultaneously. Thus, stress was an inevitable aspect of the migration process. Each sub-phase of the migration process influenced, and was influenced by, individual characteristics and values, beliefs/attitudes, strategies, and the social conditions in Germany, New Zealand, and Britain. These psychosocial factors, in turn, interacted with one another also. Taken together, these psychosocial factors either increased the likelihood of staying or of returning. Regardless of whether German immigrants stayed or returned, dealing with the challenges and the associated stress acted as a force for exhilarated evolvement, which was linked to the characteristics that prompted their initial migration decision. The experiences, interpretations, and outcomes of female and male German immigrants were remarkably similar. However, some gender differences were identified. The study provides detailed recommendations that aim at providing resource structures that assist German immigrants to unfold their potential, to learn as much as possible, and to evolve and adapt |

Just for laughs an analysis of 21st century African American situational comedies / This work has discovered that because of the historical relationship between African Americans and American society, there will always be an element of prejudice in the American entertainment's representation of African Americans. The African American community has to discover and achieve a new manner in which to get their representations to the masses. This would require an acceptance of the diversity of the African American community and not feel the need to comply with an established dominant society view of what a "good" representation. There needs to be a concern for an honest representation. This may not be possible in the genre of situational comedies |

language policy of South Africa what do people say? / The research project takes a hard look into the attitudes or perceptions of speakers of African languages towards the new language policy of South Africa. The question answered in this regard is, "What do people say?" The research project explores the extent of radical shift in African consciousness giving impetus to the resurgence of African languages so that they carry philosophical and scientific discourse to unprecedented heights. Maintaining the primordial language policy that is dominated by English and Afrikaans is like putting new wine into old skins. Thus, the research also seeks to establish strategies that could be implemented in order to ensure the revitalisation and rejuvenation of African languages so that all the languages take their rightful place. In other words, the research explores ways of injecting a new kind of consciousness that integrates language and content in schools so as to replace the primordial "telescopic philanthropy" type of approach existing currently in education and other major domains |

Listening to drag music, performance, and the construction of oppositional culture / During drag shows, audience members and performers alike engage in gendered and sexual behaviors that transgress binary categories of homosexual/heterosexual and feminine/masculine. Drag shows thus constitute oppositional cultures, or free spaces, where participants enact behaviors that are suppressed in the dominant culture and build politicized views of gender and sexuality. This study therefore provides an empirical example of how music is used as a cultural resource to challenge dominant institutions and construct collective action frameworks necessary to mobilize political protest |

Mapping the shadow in the work of de Sade & Sacher-Masoch constellating sociological & psychological possibilities / This present work takes as its starting point the literary fictional works of the Marquis de Sade's 120 Days of Sodom and Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's Venus in Furs. These publications are treated as textual ethnographies, and as such, evidence "The Other." The realm of sadomasochism provides a fertile starting point into this mapping of Shadow by facilitating focus on considerations of desire, hierarchy, morality, understanding & identity, elements which are evidenced to be embedded in the works of de Sade and Sacher-Masoch. The events of the aforementioned texts are chronicled, their narratives condensed through textual analysis, and an inventory of content "motifs" evidenced within the works is formulated. Themes generated from the motifs are analyzed |

Murray's people a collection of essays about the fascinating people who explored, settled, and developed Tacoma and the Pacific Northwest / "Wobblies and patriots. Explorers gold-diggers, bankers, printers, and newspapermen. For more than 30 years, historian and journalist Murray C. Morgan entertained, enlightened and delighted readers with his stories of the people and the events which played a critical, and oftentimes humorous role in the growth and development of Tacoma and the Pacific Northwest. Murray Morgan died in mid 2000, leaving a wonderful legacy for generations to discover. What will you find here? Accounts of the leveling of Seattle in 1898; a mammoth hoax involving the discovery of a woolly mammoth; Mark Twain at the Tacoma Theater; a Tacoma's teenager's encounter with President Woodrow Wilson at the Stadium Bowl, stories of the Wilkes Expedition, dirty political goings-on, and a young cub reporter's scoop on the rescue of Amelia Earhart. These are terrific stories of a time past - a time when a world was waiting to be discovered, when a man's vision could create a city, and when life was lived intensely by people who were willing to take risks and knew how to have fun"--Introd |

New England cod fishing industry and maritime dimensions of the American Revolution In order to get at the linkages between the worlds of commerce and the way of war I triangulated data culled from merchant ledgers, ship's log books, customs records, shipping records, diaries, newspapers, and military service records. Drawing on these sources, the dissertation defends a two-fold argument. First, economic competition between vested interests in the British Empire, principally New England fish merchants, West Country fish merchants, and West Indian sugar planters, resulted in a series of commercial regulations and naval police actions aimed at restricting New England's economic expansion. These regulations and actions culminated in the British state's fateful decision in 1775 to close the New England cod fishing industry, which ultimately motivated colonists to go to war. Second, fishermen and fish merchants played key roles in winning the war. Merchants converted trade routes into military supply lines and transformed their fishing vessels into warships. Fishermen armed and manned the first American navy, served in the first coast guard units, manned privateers, and fought on land. These multi-faceted efforts helped secure American independence |

New Zealand redoubts, stockades, and blockhouses, 1840-1848 / At least thirty-two redoubts, stockades, and blockhouses were built in New Zealand in the years 1840-1848. They were erected for the defense of the local community, to secure a strategic position, or to consolidate a military line of advance. Fortifications were built at Kororareka, Waimate, Auckland, Wanganui, Wellington (including the Hutt Valley and Porirua), Nelson, and Akaroa. An inventory has been compiled and a preliminary assessment made of the current condition and archaeological potential of the sites. Development over the last 150 years has damaged or destroyed many sites and any remains that survive must be regarded as archaeologically important |

No laughing matter an exploration of the role of the protagonist in Australian feature films classified as social comedies / Australian film has engaged social issues since its earliest days, often within the genre of comedy. Writers and filmmakers have treated a wide range of issues with varying degrees of success in engaging their audience in a level of social discourse. This success has been independent of the specific issue addressed, the government funding policy, cultural policy, the national and international political climate, and available technologies. Rather it can be attributed to the filmmaker's approach to both characterization and narrative. Of the films chosen for examination it appeared that a positively portrayed protagonist in combination with a narrative that provided a clear but balanced opinion on the issue addressed was more successful in engaging its audience in a level of social discourse. The ability of the films to engage their respective audiences was based on criteria such as box office success, critical reception, and media and public discussion of the film around the time of its release as well as more recently. The findings of this investigation arose from the production of a feature length screenplay, The Last of the Wombats, which dealt with the issue of national security. The screenplay follows the Ruddocks along on their journey from personal insecurity, through issues of perceived threat, to the initial response of increasing the physical security measures around their house. These actions produce more problems than they solve, and this state of imbalance forces the main characters (Amber, Brian and Karen) to address their own insecurities and eventually to move beyond them |

play of desire Sinclair Ross's gay fiction / Informed by gay and lesbian studies, queer theory, and feminist theory, this dissertation illustrates my contention that queering Ross both reveals new avenues for textual exploration and threatens foreclosure of a critical understanding of the impossibility of homosexual subjectivity in his fiction. My critical interventions propose that an understanding of the unstable categories of desire, identity, and subjectivity are required in order to comprehend Ross's concerns with "homosexual difference" and changing configurations of gender and sexuality |

portrayal of gender in the Children's Book Council of Australia honour and award books, 1981-1993 This study examines the portrayal of gender in Australian Children's Book Council award and honour books in the Younger Reader and Older Reader categories over the years 1981-1993. Its purpose is to discover whether the books portray females and males in equally positive ways, which both reflect their changing roles in our society and provide models for gender construction to young readers. This is done by means of a qualitative analysis of the text from selected books, supported by a quantitative analysis in the form of frequency counts of gender representations. Relevant government policies and feminist ideologies which have influenced them are reviewed, and compared with the study's findings to ascertain how far the CBC books' gender portrayals are in line with current education policies and research. The findings suggest a review of CBC judging criteria, and highlight the need for a critical literacy approach in classroom literacy teaching. Recommendations for the broadening of research in literature are made |

Queer cinema as a fifth cinema in South Africa and Australia Australia had the world's first gay film festival at the Sydney Filmmakers Co-op in June 1976, part of a larger commemoration of the Stonewall Riots in New York City of 1969. In 1994, South Africa became the first country in the world to prohibit discrimination in its constitution on the basis of sexual orientation, whilst allowing for positive discrimination to benefit persons disadvantaged by unfair discrimination. South Africa and Australia, both ex-British colonies, are used in this analysis to explore the way local queer cinematic cultures have negotiated and continue to negotiate dominant social forces in post-colonial settings. It is rare to have analyses of queer cinematic cultures and even rarer to have texts dealing with cultures outside those of Euro-America. This study offers a unique window into the formations of queer cinematic cultures of two nations of the "South." It reveals important new information on how sexual minorities from nations outside the Euro-American sphere have dealt with and continue to deal with longstanding queer cinematic oppressions. A pro-active relationship between queer representation in film and social-political action is considered by academics such as Dennis Altman to be essential for significant social and judicial change. The existence of queer and other independent films in Sydney from the 1960s onward, impacted directly on sexuality, race, and gender activism. In South Africa, the first major queer film festival, the Out In Africa Gay and Lesbian Film Festival in 1994, was instrumental in developing and maintaining a post-apartheid queer public sphere which fostered further legal change. Given the significant histories of activism through queer cinematic cultures in both Australia and South Africa, I propose in this thesis the existence of a new genus of cinema, which I term Fifth Cinema. Fifth Cinema includes Feminist Cinema, Queer Cinema, and Immigrant/Multicultural Cinema and deals with the oppressions which cultures engage with within their own cultural boundaries. It can be informed by First Cinema (classical, Hollywood), Second Cinema (Art House or dual national cinemas), Third and Fourth Cinema (cinemas dealing with the decolonisation of Third World and Fourth World people), but it develops its unique characteristics by countering internal cultural colonisation. Fifth Cinema functions as a heterognosis, where multi-dimensional representations around sexuality, race, and gender are used to assist in broader cultural liberation |

Queering the queer(ed) pomosexual "readings" of Shakespeare's adaptation of Romeo and Juliet / This thesis investigates Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, one of the exemplary heteronormative love stories in Western culture. By engaging in new queer or pomosexual readings of Shakespeare's text, in relation to various adaptations, including Shakespeare in love, Tromeo and Juliet, and Get real, this thesis challenges the traditional heteronormative reading of the play and argues that the play itself is queer. I argue that queering involves the non-normative and disruptive process(es) of reading texts. Adaptation, as a process of re-writing/disrupting a normative, "originary," historically situated text is by definition a queer process. Romeo and Juliet is a historical text that has been adapted, and thus queered, numerous times; Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is itself an adaptation and therefore is always already a queer text. Thus, adaptations of Shakespeare's text are necessarily involved in queering the queer(ed): a pomosexual process that ultimately leads to the breakdown of the normative signification system |

Red state, blue state, red news, blue news This research is organized by an investigation of the demand-side and supply-side of media polarization. The demand-side study looks at ideological news audiences through a series of path analysis models using the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press 2004 media consumption survey. On the "supply side," media polarization is demonstrated through a content analysis of 44 television news transcripts to quantify the amount of partisan news framing during the Senate confirmation hearings for Samuel Alito's nomination to the Supreme Court. Through both of these quantitative studies, and complimented by a review of polarization literature, as well as interviews with political communication experts, the case is quite strong for the politically polarizing effects of the news media |

safety of journalists an assessment of perceptions of the origins and implementation of policy at two international television news agencies / Being a journalist today can be a deadly pursuit, particularly for those covering conflict and other dangerous assignments. In 2004 more journalists and other media workers were killed than in the last ten years. While it is impossible to guarantee that journalists will not be killed or injured, kidnapped, or detained, a policy has been created to help protect them in the course of their duties. This study examines the perceptions of journalists working for two international television news agencies about this safety policy called the "Joint code of practice for journalists working in conflict zones." This policy was adopted in November 2000 by five major television companies including the television news agencies Reuters Television and Associated Press Television News. This study finds that the policy had significant flaws in how it was formulated and how it is communicated, implemented, and reviewed. Recognising the existence of unequal relations of power and conflicting interests at play in any policy process, this study stresses that in the case of the journalist safety policy, all stakeholders should have participated in the relevant policy stages. This argument arises from researching the policy document as well as from the point of view of managers, and particularly journalists who work on dangerous assignments, either full-time or on a freelance basis for either of the two television news agencies. It finds that while journalists are not generally aware of the policy, they do practice many of its elements as well as a range of their own custom-made strategies to protect themselves. The result is to make the policy less effective than it could be |

Sexual and spiritual identity transformation among ex-gays and ex-ex-gays narrating a new self / Using Burke's (1966) notion of terministic screens and applying Linde's (1993) work on the creation of coherence in life stories, I analyze the role that both overarching metanarrative beliefs and personal narrative constructions play in individuals' attempts to resolve spiritual and sexual identity conflicts and create a coherent sense of self. Narrative is employed by speakers as a means to make sense of their lives and achieve a coherent sense of self. By focusing on stories of the management of identity conflict, I investigate a significant form-function interaction, i.e. the linguistic structures that result when challenges to one of the primary personal and social functions of narrative are intrinsic to the life experience and hence the language event. These narratives are theoretically important because they provide a salient opportunity to test the limits of performativity (Butler, 1990) and the potential of narrative to transform membership in what have come to be viewed as relatively fixed identity categories. Individuals use narrative not only as a means of expressing identity, but also as a primary tool for creating and transforming it; thus, analyzing these narratives' genres, structures, and features provides insight into the critical roles language and narrative itself play in sexual and spiritual identity transformations |

social construction of "sexual knowledge" exploring the narratives of southern African youth of Indian descent in the context of HIV/AIDS / This study pays attention to youth of Indian-descent within the context of sexuality and identity and their role in HIV/AIDS. By gaining an understanding of this interaction between identity and sexuality, it adds to our knowledge of the social dynamics that contribute to the prevalence or lack of prevalence of HIV/AIDS within population groups. This study uses a social constructionist discourse analytic framework and aims to explore the construction of sexual knowledge by southern African youth of Indian-descent. The findings indicate that the construction of sex is primarily one of risk and ambiguity. Additionally, the construction of sexual knowledge highlights the significance of gender differentials and the importance of agency and responsibility for sexual education. These constructions reinforce traditional educational roles that contribute to the construction of sex as risky and ambiguous. In addition, a social identity of Indian-ness and othering is used as a strategy to give meaning to the lack of parental responsibility with regard to sexual education. The use of social identity is seen as highlighting the importance of acknowledging the sexual values within which youth are embedded. This study concludes with possible ways to shift these constructions. For example, one of the conclusions suggests the implementation of an alternative school-based sexual education that acknowledges the sexual values in which youth are embedded. Furthermore, this acknowledgement of sexual values should take place within a holistic sex education programme that is positive about sexuality. Additionally, a reframing of youth as capable and active decision-makers in their sexual education is necessitated in order to see youth as a potential resource in HIV/AIDS prevention |

Some considerations on China's minorities in the 21st century conflict or conciliation? / On a global scale, there has been a significant increase of ethnic conflicts in the last decade. They constitute one of the main sources of domestic political instability in multi-national countries. Recent opinion polls among Chinese citizens point to growing ethnic conflicts even in China. This paper addresses primarily five sources of conflict: collective memory, political conflicts, economic conflicts, cultural conflicts, and new conflicts arising from economic and social change. It explores various forms of ethnic resistance (active and passive ones, violent and peaceful ones, formal and informal patterns) and suggests possible measures of conflict prevention and reduction of conflicts. Finally it argues that China may provide a good basis for such measures, as ethnic minorities are not only recognized as nationalities, but also are respected by public law and--according to this law--enjoy the same rights as the ethnic majority |

Stereotypical perceptions of the communication behaviors of gay males This study examined the stereotypical communication behaviors of gay males. The study examined the associations of assertiveness, responsiveness, homonegativity, and biological sex. Participants were 359 (195 men, 164 women) students. Participants provided responses to questions about verbal and nonverbal behaviors for known gay individuals and individuals perceived to be gay. The participants then completed the Assertiveness-Responsiveness Measure (Richmond & McCroskey, 1990) in a self-report and observer-report, and the Modern Homonegativity Scale (Morrison & Morrison, 2002). Results indicated some of the more predominant responses to verbal and nonverbal behaviors are inconsistent with the prevalent societal perceptions of homosexuality. Significant associations between biological sex, assertiveness and responsiveness were discovered. The results show that perceived responsiveness and homonegativity were associated. Self-reported assertiveness and self-reported responsiveness were consistent with perceptions of other's assertiveness and responsiveness. There were significant differences based on biological sex, assertiveness and responsiveness. Future research would resolve some of the questions that this research raised, in particular, why are men consistently more likely to illustrate higher levels of homonegativity. Future research should examine other communication constructs that could further resolve many of the questions that plague gay males |

Text and context of malediction a study of antisemitic and heterosexist hate violence in New South Wales 1995-2000 / At the core of this dissertation is the analysis of how and why hate speech is successful in constraining the behaviors and actions of marginalized groups. The discordance between what constitutes the social definition of malediction or verbal abuse and the legal definition of vilification, offers an avenue of investigation that illuminates the problems associated with constraining speech acts in a democratic state. In isolating the role of speech in the practice of hate violence in NSW, in this dissertation I show that while government legislation may be able to regulate the extremes of hate speech and hate violence, it leaves untouched the everyday speech acts and acts of violence that are used to separate, isolate, and silence marginalized individuals and groups |

uneasy legacy Vietnam veterans and Australian society / Rather than discovering the popularly perceived group of disturbed malcontents, however, the broad scope of the sources (particularly the interviews) revealed a group of men searching for an historical context into which to place their experiences both during the war and in the following years. The evidence revealed a group of average Australians who, for a period thirty years ago, were asked to make the ultimate sacrifice. The interviews offered the opportunity to provide context to a difficult history, contributing not only to the study of the conflict, but to a wider Australian public memory in a country whose war stories have had so much impact |

use of sexual orientation-related insults among college students The purpose of this study was: to determine what insults college students know and use; to develop a model of insult use in general, and of sexual orientation-related insult (SOI) use in particular; and, to understand the impact of SOI use on students of different sexual orientations. Data were collected from interview participants, field observations on and around a university campus, top-rated movies and TV shows, and two focus groups with lesbian/gay/bisexual (LGB) students. Overall, the interview participants generated 1,453 insults, a mean of 20 insults. Men listed significantly more SOI's than women. The insult categories rated as "worst" by participants were race-related, SOI's, and insults for women. Field data yielded 317 insults. The three most frequent categories of field insults were for women, personality-related insults, and SOI's (accounting for 14.5% of field insults). Fag was one of the five most frequently overheard insults, and was used significantly more frequently by men than women. None of the recorded SOI uses appeared to be directed to an LGB target. The media data yielded 655 insults, with comedies including significantly more insults than dramas. SOI's accounted for 1.8% of media insults. Decisions regarding both serious and good-natured insult use involved four major components: insulter characteristics, social cues to be read, social cues to be conveyed, and the response of the insult target (and sometimes of an audience). The majority of heterosexual participants identified SOI's as inappropriate to direct towards LGB people, though LGB participants described numerous examples of being maliciously targeted with SOI's. Heterosexual participants who were supportive of LGB people were significantly less likely to use SOI's than participants who were ambivalent or disapproving. Heterosexual men used SOI's with greater frequency than heterosexual women. These men used SOI's primarily as tools of peer pressure and regulating gender role expression in other men. SOI's were a safe way for men with traditional conceptions of masculinity to express affection for each other while asserting heterosexuality; less traditional men were less likely to use SOI's |

Writing the love of boys representations of male-male desire in the literature of Murayama Kaita and Edogawa Ranpo / Chapter Four examines Ranpo's essays on representations of male-male desire in Kaita's work, which he saw as embodying an innocent and especially poignant form of boyish affection. These essays, along with Ranpo's autobiographical essays about his crushes on other schoolboys during his youth, implicitly attempt to disassociate the love of boys from the moralistic and pathologizing rhetoric of sexology. As Chapter Five shows, some of Ranpo's early fiction, including "Ningen isu" ("The human chair," 1925), "Issun-bohi" ("The dwarf," 1926-1927), "Ryoi no hate" ("The fruits of curiosity-hunting," 1930), shows an ambivalent attitude toward male homoeroticism. These works contain caveats reassuring readers about the "strangeness" of male homoeroticism even though they cater to the scopophilic curiosity of readers by incorporating scenes of male-male attraction. Similar dynamics are visible in the novel Koto no oni (The demon of the lonely isle, 1929-30), which features a man who prefers sleeping with men. Although the narrative voice describes the character's feelings in sensational terms, at other times, Ranpo allows the character to describe his feelings in ways that make them comprehensible to the audience. Chapter Six examines Ranpo's essays from the 1930s on same-sex desire in the writing of other authors, including Edward Carpenter, John Addington Symonds, and Walt Whitman. These essays represent a product of Ranpo's ongoing explorations of the meaning and historical manifestations of same-sex love. Although these essays deal gingerly with the subject of male homoeroticism, these essays, like Ranpo's autobiographical essays, defend boyish love and male camaraderie as beautiful and socially useful while arguing for the important position of male-male desire has played in literary history |
