"For here forlorn and lost I tread" the gender differences between captivity narratives of men and women from 1528 to 1886 / The captivity narrative itself changed over time, depending on the audience and the mood of the times. Women moved from being stoic, Puritan women, through the Amazon stage of the American Revolution, to the Victorian Age and its vision of women as delicate and frail. The narratives can tell scholars much about a past way of life, and how men and women were viewed through the centuries |

"Staying bush" a study of gay men living in rural areas / This thesis documents a largely unreported aptitude and proficiency by rural gay men to live in the bush. It suggests that their close affinity with place gives them a sense of belonging that, when combined with their concept of a gay lifestyle, effectively queers the places in which they live. That gay men can live fulfilled lives in the very places they are said to have fled evokes an innovative perspective together with an appreciation of what it is to be gay in the bush |

action plan for Australian birds, 2000 / Provides a national overview of the conservation status of all birds occurring in Australian territory against IUCN categories. Outlines threats and recommends actions to minimise these. Habitats or areas of particular importance for bird conservation including key areas for threatened species are listed. The plan identifies processes that threaten birds and the areas where these processes are a problem in order to recommend conservation priorities including research and management actions. Lists 25 taxa as Extinct, 32 as Critically Endangered, 41 as Endangered, 82 as Vulnerable, and 81 as Near Threatened as of 30 June, 2000. The remaining 1,114 taxa are deemed to be Least Concern, including 28 introduced taxa and 95 vagrants. Recovery outlines are presented for all threatened taxa (Critically Endangered, Endangered, and Vulnerable) and taxon summaries for taxa listed as Extinct or Near Threatened. An additional 53 taxon summaries are presented for Least Concern taxa that have restricted distributions or have previously been considered threatened |

Alpine lizard research in Fiordland National Park : February-March 2007 / In 2004, a new species of skink ("Sinbad skink"; Oligosoma sp. "Sinbad Valley") was discovered in Fiordland National Park, South Island, New Zealand. Although the individual was collected as a potential holotype specimen, it was a juvenile; therefore, a taxonomic description of this species remained incomplete. Field expeditions were undertaken to the Darran Mountains and Llawrenny Peaks, Fiordland National Park, to collect data on and photographs of an adult Sinbad skink for the preparation of a formal taxonomic description of the species. The Barrier Knob and Sinbad Gully areas were surveyed and 11 lizards, including one Sinbad skink, were captured over 5 days. One possible new species of skink, which has been assigned the tag name "Barrier skink," was discovered. Another skink (tentatively called the "mahogany skink") may represent a second new species, but requires further investigation. The presence of introduced mammals and weka (Gallirallus australis) within the Sinbad area are of concern for both the Sinbad and mahogany (Oligosoma sp. "mahogany skink") skinks, since these skinks are likely to have high priority for research and conservation. Further surveys are required to identify and secure populations of each taxon, and to establish their range, habitat and microhabitat, and conservation status. Our findings suggest that Fiordland is a potential "hotspot" for lizard diversity. Additional surveys for both geckos and skinks in the Fiordland National Park are required, as further new species are likely to exist throughout the area |

Analysis of the ash weight and elemental composition in caribou (Rangifer tarandus) faecal pellets collected at Colomac and other sites in the NWT / Barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus) faecal pellets were collected from several sites in the NWT and analysed for evidence of exposure to major dust and soil sources using two methods. The collection sites included two areas of tailings at the Colomac mine (abandoned), with on-site and off-site control areas and seasonal ranges, and sites at or near the Ekati and Diavik diamond mines. Insoluble ash content of the faecal material averaged 9.3% of the dry matter (D.M.) and varied significantly between sites. A group of samples from the tailings areas at Colomac had elevated ash contents and exceeded 30% of dry matter in five samples. Based on several assumptions, the dietary soil intake necessary to achieve the high ash contents in the faecal samples from Colomac would exceed 50% of the diet in one sample. The average ash content of all the samples collected from the tailings area at Colomac was significantly (p<0.05) higher than the off-site control samples. Ash from the faecal pellets was chemically similar to tailings collected at Colomac. Consistent differences were also observed between the Ekati samples and those from natural range areas, although the variance explained by the associations was relatively low. The results of the study are generally consistent with published reports on high rates of soil ingestion at lick sites by ungulates. This ingestion can result in very high levels of soil in the diet, similar to the maximum levels noted here. The ecological risk assessment for Colomac included an explicit soil ingestion model for caribou which assumed an ingestion rate of 20% of the diet. The data in the present study support the use of this average value but indicate that maximum values may range as high as 50% in some caribou. The study was not designed to describe the amount of the elements absorbed by caribou which have ingested the tailings |

Antifeedant effects of diethyl toluamide and neem oil on native cave weta, cockroaches, and amphipods / The antifeedant effects of both diethyl toluamide (DEET) and neem oil added at concentrations of 0.2% to cereal-based baits used for vertebrate pest control in New Zealand were investigated with three taxa of native invertebrates known to eat these baits. DEET reduced the numbers of captive cave weta and cockroaches feeding on treated non-toxic baits, but neem oil did not. Cinnamon oil, routinely added to bait used for possum control, also failed to reduce the numbers of captive cave weta and cockroaches feeding on treated non-toxic baits. Captive amphipods were not observed feeding on treated or untreated baits. Further tests are needed to confirm both the palatability and efficacy of toxic baits containing DEET to possums, rats, and mice, and the antifeedant effects of toxic baits containing DEET on invertebrates in the field. The environmental fate of DEET will also need to be investigated before it can be added routinely to baits used for control of possums and rodents in New Zealand |

application of the monthly time step Pitman rainfall-runoff model to the Kafue River basin of Zambia The study's output includes: a comprehensive database of hydrometeorological, physical catchment characteristics, landuse and water abstraction information for the Kafue basin; calibrated Pitman model parameters for the sub-catchments within the Kafue basin; recommendations for future work and data collection programmes for the application of the model. The study has also built capacity by facilitating training and exposure to rainfall-runoff models (specifically the Pitman model) and associated software, SPATSIM. In addition, the dissemination of the results of this study will serve as an effective way of raising awareness on the application of the Pitman model and the use of the SPATSIM software within Zambia and the region. The overall Pitman model results were found to be satisfactory and the calibrated model is able to reproduce the observed spatial and temporal variations in streamflow characteristics in the Kafue River basin |

Aspects of the carbon cycle in terrestrial ecosystems of northeastern Smaland / Boreal and temperate ecosystems of the northern hemisphere are important for the future development of global climate. In this study, the carbon cycle has been studied in a pine forest, a meadow, a spruce forest and two deciduous forests in the Simpevarp investigation area in southern Sweden (5705N, 34055E). Ground respiration and ground Gross Primary Production (GPP) has been measured three times during spring 2004 with the closed chamber technique. Soil temperature, soil moisture and Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) were also measured. An exponential regression with ground respiration against soil temperature was used to extrapolate respiration over spring 2004. A logarithmic regression with ground GPP against PAR was used to extrapolate GPP in meadow over spring 2004. Ground respiration is affected by soil temperature in all ecosystems but pine, but still it only explains a small part of the variation in respiration and this indicates that other abiotic factors also have an influence. Soil moisture affects respiration in spruce and one of the deciduous ecosystems. A comparison between measured and extrapolated ground respiration indicated that soil temperature could be used to extrapolate ground respiration. PAR is the main factor influencing GPP in all ecosystems but pine, still it could not be used to extrapolate GPP in meadow since too few measurements were done and they were from different periods of spring. Soil moisture did not have any significant effect on GPP. A Dynamic Global Vegetation Model, a DGVM called LPJ-GUESS, was downscaled to the Simpevarp investigation area. The downscaled DGVM was evaluated against measured respiration and soil organic acids for all five ecosystems. In meadow, it was evaluated against Net Primary Production, NPP. For the forest ecosystems, it was evaluated against tree layer carbon pools. The evaluation indicated that the DGVM is reasonably well downscaled to the Simpevarp investigation area and it was used for future predictions of soil respiration, tree layer carbon pool and fast decomposing soil organic carbon pool, 2001-2100. NPP was also predicted for meadow. Two different climate scenarios were used. The fast decomposing soil organic carbon pools and soil respiration increased for all ecosystems, the tree layer carbon pools increased for the forest ecosystems and NPP increased in meadow in both scenarios, 2001-2100 |

Assessing the effectiveness of a Department of Conservation procedure for training domestic dogs to avoid kiwi / An experiment assessed the effectiveness of a procedure used by Department of Conservation (DOC) conservancies to train domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) to avoid kiwi (Apteryx spp.). That procedure involves fitting a dog with a collar that delivers a brief electric shock the moment the dog contacts either a stuffed kiwi or a kiwi carcass placed in an open field. Thirteen dogs representing a range of breeds, sex and ages were sourced from a local pound. Each dog was initially trained to approach a manufactured burrow while being alone and attached to a modified retractable lead, the handle of which was fixed to a pole adjacent to the burrow. Each then received test trials where food, a stuffed possum (Trichosurus vulpecula), rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), ferret (Mustela furo), or kiwi was driven into view from within the burrow, and a carcass of that animal was presented immediately outside the burrow. Those 12 dogs that ate the food and contacted each stuffed animal or carcass then received the DOC procedure, but in a different site to that used for testing. When the test trials were repeated, only one dog (8%) behaved in a manner suggesting that the DOC training had been effective. This failure of most dogs to avoid the very stimuli that had been associated with electric shock logically precludes a dog's avoidance of live kiwi in their natural habitats. Possible reasons why the DOC procedure is unreliable are considered, as are alternative practical techniques for training kiwi avoidance, such as inducing illness in a dog after it ingests food that has a strong kiwi flavour and/or odour |

Assessment of potential Chatham Island snipe habitat on Pitt Island / After its 2006 meeting, the Chatham Island Snipe Recovery Group recommended that a habitat assessment of the predator-fenced portion of Ellen Elizabeth Preece Conservation Covenant (EEPCC) on Pitt Island be undertaken to determine its suitability for Chatham Island snipe (Coenocorypha pusilla). Fieldwork was carried out on 19-26 February 2007, both in EEPCC and in Woolshed Bush, Rangatira (South East Island), where snipe are abundant. Soil samples were collected from six matched microhabitats in EEPCC and in Woolshed Bush: beside rotting wood, beside petrel burrows, and beneath sedges, grass, herb mats, and ferns. Invertebrates were hand-sorted from the soil samples and identified to species where possible, and the biomass of soil-dwelling invertebrates (wet weight) was measured for each sample. Total numbers of invertebrates were very similar for the two islands: 2465 for Pitt Island and 2284 for Rangatira. There was also no significant difference between the islands in overall biomass (14.8 g for Pitt Island and 9.7 g for Rangatira) or biomass in any of the six microhabitats, although one microhabitat (soil beside petrel burrows) did have a higher mean number of individuals on Pitt Island than on Rangatira (n = 121 v. 26, respectively), due entirely to large numbers of tiny enchytraeid worms. It was found that there was abundant cover for snipe to nest, roost, and forage in EEPCC. We conclude that EEPCC should provide excellent habitat for Chatham Island snipe. There are no threatened invertebrate species known to be present in EEPCC that would be at risk following snipe introduction |

Australian Digital Theses Program and the theory of disruptive technologies a case study / The theory of disruptive technologies put forward by Clayton Christensen in 1997 has attracted significant attention. This case study tests the hypothesis that the theory is generalizable to new situations. It uses datasource triangulation by using document, statistical, and interview analyses (including investigator triangulation) to apply the theory to Australian Digital Theses Program (ADT) and finds that the Program may indeed be a disruptive technology in relation to academic libraries, universities, and to the publishing industry. However, it has greater potential to be disruptive in the latter, and to be a sustaining technology, as defined by the theory, in relation to libraries and universities |

In August 2003, the world gained access to a remarkable new voice: a blog written by a 25-year-old Iraqi woman living in Baghdad, whose identity remains concealed for her own protection. Calling herself Riverbend, she offers searing eyewitness accounts of the everyday realities on the ground, punctuated by astute analysis on the politics behind events. In a voice in turn eloquent, angry, reflective, and darkly comic, Riverbend recounts stories of life in an occupied city of neighbors whose homes are raided by U.S. troops, whose relatives disappear into prisons and whose children are kidnapped by money-hungry militias |

Bait station preferences of Norway rats / |

Bait station preferences of ship rats / Department of Conservation (DOC) surveillance programmes to detect rodent invasions on rodent-free islands currently involve observation of rodent interference with toxic baits in bait stations. Different DOC Conservancies use different types of bait station. We monitored the behavioural responses of 24 wildcaught captive ship rats (Rattus rattus) to four currently used bait station types; yellow plastic pipe, wooden box ("rat motel"), wooden tunnel, and white plastic Philproof bait stations. The bait stations contained non-toxic bait similar to the toxic bait used in surveillance programmes. More than 75% of the rats entered the yellow plastic pipe, wooden box, and wooden tunnel bait stations, but fewer than 10% entered the Philproof bait stations. Rats ate bait from the first three bait station types but not from the latter. The average amount of bait eaten per night by the rats that ate bait (0.8 g) was not enough for a lethal dose for 50% of the population if the baits had contained 20 ppm, or even 50 ppm, brodifacoum. On the basis of these results, DOC should use yellow plastic pipe, wooden box, or wooden tunnel bait stations rather than Philproof bait stations for surveillance for ship rats. However, other bait station types and the responses of kiore (R. exulans) and house mouse (Mus musculus) to different bait stations should be tested before any final decision is made on the best type to use in multispecies rodent surveillance programmes |

bibliographic database on stoats and weasels / This paper describes an international bibliographic database of 1213 papers, notes, books and unpublished reports dating between 1877 and 2004. It includes all available information on stoats and weasels (Mustela erminea, M. nivalis and M. frenata) ranging from casual observations to high-powered analyses. The database is listed in a searchable, interactive form on a website, www.feral.org.au, and as a simple reference list at bio.waikato.ac.nz/staff/bibliography.pdf. The listing will be regularly updated, but this introductory analysis reveals some interesting general trends so far. (1) Most of the world literature on small mustelids (53% of 1213 entries) describes work done outside New Zealand before 1990. This international literature offers a very large resource to mustelid biologists in New Zealand, which we should not ignore and cannot afford to repeat, although it should be treated with caution. The database is intended to provide easy access to this important background information. (2) New Zealand is now the world centre for research on mustelids, especially stoats: more papers on stoats have been published here--mostly (243 of 321) since 1990--than in the whole of Europe over a much longer period. (3) The database illustrates some major differences in the type of papers published about small mustelids in different parts of the world, and historical trends in publication rates by geographic region (steady in Europe; declining in America and Russia; accelerating in New Zealand). It also provides a useful framework within which to examine some historical trends in conservation priorities within New Zealand |

Birds and butterflies in Swedish urban and peri-urban habitats : a landscape perspective / Urbanization is considered to be one of the largest threats to biodiversity although little is known about the effect of habitat fragmentation on native flora and fauna in urban areas in general, and in Sweden specifically. In this thesis, data have been collected using remote sensing analyses of 100 cities, bird surveys in 34 cities, and experiments have been used to answer specific questions regarding dispersal and reproduction in different urban habitats. The dual processes of infill development and expansion of cities threaten remaining unprotected urban woodlands. Results showed that between 1 and 40% (average of 20%) of the proportion of the city area were comprised of urban woodland. Urban and peri-urban (surrounding) woodlands covered an area larger than the total area of protected forests in Sweden and had higher amounts of dead wood than typical non-protected forests. In contrast to previous studies, this thesis showed that many bird species breeding in urban woodlands were strongly affected by the surrounding city or landscape composition. On a smaller spatial scale (200 m), adjacent habitats affected population density and nestling quality of great tits Parus major breeding within urban woodlands. Movement corridors were only used by butterfly habitat specialists, and grassland corridors of intermediate quality seemed to be most efficient to promote dispersal among habitat fragments. In this thesis, I show that Sweden have relatively high proportion urban woodlands; urbanisation does not necessarily lead to a homogenization of the bird fauna; urban habitats need to be well described in detail to allow comparisons among studies; bird faunas of local urban woodlands differ among regions and are strongly affected by composition of habitats both at city and landscape levels; movement corridors may be an efficient conservation tool if specifically managed to fit the autecologies of the species of conservation concern |

Boreal caribou habitat and land use planning in the Deh Cho region, Northwest Territories / Boreal caribou Rangifer tarandus are nationally listed as Threatened. Land use jurisdictions, including communities and land claim organizations, will have to identify, steward and monitor boreal caribou habitat both for land use planning in the Deh Cho Region (southern Northwest Territories (NWT)) and for recovery planning in the NWT. Mapping current distribution (occupation) and potential habitat use (occurrence) for boreal caribou is a first step for both land use planning and recovery planning. We modeled occurrence at the landscape scale using generalized additive model analysis and Akaike Information Criterion with habitat information from spectral classification and habitat attributes such as cutlines, fire -history and elevation. The Deh Cho First Nations database of lifetime harvest kill sites and sightings from an aerial survey in March 2002 revealed that boreal caribou occupation has not changed at the regional level. Observations of boreal caribou fit relatively well with occurrence predicted from the modeling. Boreal caribou were strongly associated with black spruce and lichen on uplands and in lowlands |

Braided river ecology : a literature review of physical habitats and aquatic invertebrate communities / A braided river is one that, over some part of its length, flows in multiple, mobile channels across a gravel floodplain. In New Zealand, many braided rivers remain in a relatively unmodified condition, but increasing demands for hydro-electricity generation, irrigation, gravel extraction and flood protection works are placing pressure on these systems. However, apart from a limited number of studies on the ecology of individual species or reaches, there has been little coordinated ecological research to assess the overall values and function of braided river ecosystems in New Zealand. This review summarises the international and New Zealand literature on braided rivers, with particular emphasis on benthic invertebrate ecology. Braided rivers typically experience short-term channel migration within the active bed and greater lateral channel migration across the entire floodplain in the longer term. Channel migration occurs because steep headwater tributaries supply highly variable discharges and mobile erodable substrates to the mainstem. Braided rivers typically possess extended floodplains, which may contain a mosaic of floodplain habitats ranging from highly unstable main-stem channels to stable spring complexes. Main channel aquatic invertebrate communities are frequently low in diversity and dominated by the leptophlebiid mayfly Deleatidium spp., but also chironomids and elmid beetles. In contrast, floodplain springs can have highly diverse communities rich in amphipods, mayflies, caddis, snails and chironomids. Groundwater and floodplain pond habitats also occur frequently and can contain several specialist taxa. Braided rivers and their floodplains are spatially complex, temporally dynamic habitats with high landscape- and reach-scale biodiversity values. The challenge facing managers is to protect this biodiversity within the context of increasing human demands on the rivers. This report highlights the particular threats and management issues associated with braided rivers in New Zealand and identifies areas where future research is required |

This difference disappeared when the amount of substrate available was taken into account. When the young stands were positioned north of the old, the bryophytes were equally frequent in both forest stages, indicating that the aspect of a clearcut matters. In conclusion, young forests have the potential to host a high diversity of species. Research on young natural and managed forests is needed to formulate science-based conservation strategies in managed forest landscapes |

Burmese Buddhist imagery of the early Bagan period (1044-1113) Buddhist imagery of Bagan widely regarded to represent the beginnings of "pure" Theravada practice that King Anawrahta, the first Burman ruler, actively encouraged. This simplistic view has limited the potential of the imagery to provide a greater understanding of Buddhist practice at Bagan, and subsequently, the cross-cultural interactions that may have been occurring. In this light the narrative sculptural imagery of the period is interrogated against the principal Mahayana and Theravada texts relating to the life of Gotama Buddha. This review, along with the discussion regarding potential agencies for stylistic change, reveals that during the early Bagan period, Buddhism was an eclectic mix of both Theravada and Mahayana, which integrated with pre-existing spiritual traditions. Towards the end of the early Bagan period, trends were emerging which would lead to a distinctly Burmese form of Buddhist practice and visual expression |

Can tidal power promote sustainable integrated coastal development in Bangladesh? Coastal Bangladesh is highly vulnerable to natural disasters, especially from cyclones, tidal surges and the effects of global warming on sea-level rise. Consequently, most of this coastal area has been protected by embankments and sluice gates, which can accommodate the normal tidal head rise and fall. The potential of tidal power to use this infrastructure, together with its associated problems and mitigation measures, have been analysed by comparing existing and potential tidal power technologies around the world, including a proposed Kimberley tidal power project in Western Australia. The research has identified that a significant amount of power could be produced from the tidal range of coastal Bangladesh by using the simple low-cost technology of tidal wheels in the tidal embankment sluice gates. The electricity produced could be utilised by various coastal interests, such as agriculture, shrimp aquaculture and other resource producing activities. However, the real benefits of this technology are that it can be applied in a way that simultaneously enables the development of local infrastructure and the improvement in living conditions of the local people by creating income generation and employment opportunities in these coastal communities. The thesis puts forward a community based co-management model as a means of effectively integrating tidal power in coastal area management in Bangladesh |

Captive rearing and biology of the endangered giant land snails Placostylus ambagiosus and P. hongii (Pulmonata:Bulimulidae) / Rearing of the land snails Placostylus ambagiosus paraspiritus, P. a. michiei, and P. hongii in captivity was investigated as a conservation management option for establishing new populations of these threatened animals. Snails were kept in the laboratory with mostly karaka, Corynocarpus laevigatus, leaves as food. Snails were exposed to differing frequencies of handling, crowding conditions, and given different substrates in which to lay eggs. Less frequent disturbance resulted in better survival in P. ambagiosus. Both P. ambagiosus and P. hongii laid clutches of 1-84 similarly sized eggs buried up to 2 cm deep, but the species appeared to have different substrate size preferences. Placostylus ambagiosus kept singly or in pairs grew larger than those in the wild. Crowding reduced growth rate, increased mortality, and resulted in smaller adults. Captive-bred adult P. ambagiosus lived for 3.3-11.4 y: one adult P. hongii lived for 2.6 y and another lived for 4.6 y before being translocated onto an island. Both Placostylus ambagiosus and P. hongii can be successfully reared in captivity, in the laboratory, and large numbers of snails can potentially be produced, albeit with substantial costs. Although potentially risky for augmenting existing populations, these protocols may enable the establishment of new populations of these snails |

Changing global book collection patterns in ARL libraries The overlap of global book collections in member libraries of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), as exemplified by an analysis of nearly 28.5 million records in a July 2004 snapshot of the OCLC WorldCat database, is not as extensive as expected. For all countries combined, excluding North America, the average number of ARL library holdings per bibliographic record is fewer than five, that is, fewer than five ARL libraries own copies of the book represented by the bibliographic record. For each of ten world regions, excluding North America, the average number of ARL library holdings per bibliographic record ranges from a low of 2.99 for East Asian books to a high of 6.28 for Latin American books. That is, on average fewer than three and only slightly more than six ARL libraries hold any book that was published outside of North America |

Checklist of the parasites of fishes of Bangladesh / The parasite fauna of fishes of Bangladesh remains poorly known. Parasites have been reported from only 85 of the 528 species of marine and freshwater fish occurring in the waters of Bangladesh. The situation is complicated by the large number of reports that are based on apparent misidentifications, the existence of a plethora of poorly described species, and the relatedness of the Bangladeshi fish parasite fauna to that of the larger Indian subregion, which is also poorly known for many of the same reasons |

Checklist of the parasites of fishes of the Philippines / This checklist summarizes information on the parasites of Philippine fishes contained in the world literature dating from the earliest known record (de Blainville 1822) to the end of 1996. Information is presented in the form of parasite-host and host-parasite lists. Included are 201 named species of parasites, distributed among the higher taxa as follows: Apicomplexta - 1, Ciliophora - 16, Mastigophora - 2, Microspora - 1, Myxozoa - 9, Trematoda - 90, Monogenea - 22, Cestoda - 6, Nematoda - 20, Acanthocephala - 5, Mollusca - 1, Branchiura - 2, Copepoda - 21 and Isopoda - 5. Also included are many records of parasites not identified to species level. Parasites have been reported from 172 of the more than 2030 species of marine and freshwater fish occurring in Philippine waters, and from another 17 species of freshwater aquarium fish examined in the Philippines but not found in natural waters. The Parasite-Host List is organized on a taxonomic basis and provides information for each parasite species on the environment (fresh water, brackish water, marine), the location (site of infection) in or on its host(s), the species of host(s) infected, the known geographic distribution (by island) in the Philippines, and the published sources for each host and locality record. The Host-Parasite List is organized according to the taxonomy of the hosts, and includes for each host, the English language and local (typically Tagalog) common names, environment (fresh water, brackish water, marine), status in the Philippines (native or exotic), and information on the known Philippine distribution of the parasites. Both lists are accompanied by remarks and footnotes, as warranted, giving specific information on points of systematics, nomenclature, possible misidentifications, introductions, pathogenicity, etc. Citations are included for all references and a supplementary list of references contains other literature on Philippine fish parasites. Parasite and host indices are included. The following new taxonomic combinations are made: Prosorhynchoides philippinorum (Velasquez, 1959) n. comb., for Bucephaloides philippinorum Velasquez, 1959; Prosorhynchoides sibi (Yamaguti, 1940) n. comb., for Bucephaloides sibi (Yamaguti, 1940); Genolinea awa (Yamaguti, 1965) n. comb., for Pseudobunocotyla awa Yamaguti, 1965; and Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) philippinensis (Velasquez, 1980) n. comb., for Spirocamallanus philippinensis Velasquez, 1980 |

Checklist of the parasites of fishes of Viet Nam / The parasite fauna of fishes of Viet Nam has received considerable attention, particularly by scientists of the former Soviet Union, in the marine environment, and by Vietnamese and Czech freshwater scientists. Nevertheless, parasites have been recorded from only about ten percent of the more than 1300 species of marine and freshwater fish occurring in the waters of Viet Nam. Knowledge of freshwater fauna is hampered by a lack of descriptive work and by many probable misidentifications of parasites, due to the tendency of Vietnamese workers to report European species from the local fish fauna |

China : defining the boundary between the market and the state - UW restrictedChina has made enormous progress in developing the modern legal and regulatory foundation for the market economy. The private sector is now the main driver of growth, and new laws have gone a long way toward establishing private property rights, competition, and mechanisms for entry and exit comparable to those of many OECD countries. At the same time important challenges remain, including further clarification of the scope of state ownership, reform of relations among central and local governments, firmer establishment of the rule of law, and strengthening of regulatory institutions and processes. This review of China's regulatory system focuses on the overall economic context for regulatory reform, the government's capacity to manage regulatory reform, competition policy and enforcement, and market openness. The review also examines the regulatory framework in the electricity, water and health care sectors, and follows a multidisciplinary and highly interactive approach. A number of OECD instruments and policies are used in this assessment, although the review also takes into account the specific challenges faced by the Chinese authorities. The review includes a comprehensive set of policy recommendations.--Publisher's description |

Chip geometry : methods to impact the geometry of market chips / In general there is an understanding that geometrical consistency of chips is desirable in the pulping processes (both for mechanical and chemical pulping). Scandinavian pulp mills normally communicate requirements for chip geometry to the producers through quality regulations and bonus penalty systems. To optimize their deliveries sawmills try to produce chips of optimal size and screen out undesired fractions, and as a standard procedure they re-chip oversized chips into acceptable sizes. This thesis evaluates the level of consistency of market chips and the possibilities to increase consistency. Studies were conducted in the value chain from the point of chip production in sawmills to the point of delivery at the pulp mill gate. The geometry of chips from a single sawmill is almost as uniform as that of chips made by a pulp mill and the geometry is relatively consistent over time. However the geometry differs among sawmills and the resulting mix can be expected to have low consistency. There are possibilities to increase total consistency by steering chips from different sawmills toward common geometrical targets. In 2001 an additional (fifth) screen was introduced in the SCAN-standard for measuring chip fractions, with the aim to increase possibilities to promote consistency. When constructing bonus penalty systems for the new standard it is important to take into consideration the effects the additional screen has on the classification result. Oversized chips that are re-chipped were found to differ from ordinary market chips in geometry, in addition to having high content of bark and defects |

Collation of data for ecosystem modelling of Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Marine Reserve / In New Zealand, our understanding of coastal marine ecosystems is surprisingly limited. Ecosystem models that link all species in a food web via energy transfer can be valuable tools for increasing our understanding of these ecosystems. We present the data required to build a balanced ecosystem model for the coastal marine region surrounding and including Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Marine Reserve, near Gisborne, New Zealand. We consolidate species into 22 groups and discuss them in detail, presenting additional information for subgroups and individual species as available. We review the literature and field data used to estimate values for each group as well as for the system as a whole. We also outline how we defined the spatial extent of many groups. For each group, we discuss the variability within estimates of four main data types (biomass, production rates, consumption rates and diet preferences) and we outline different ways to estimate diet composition to maximise the realism of such models. We are relatively confident that the data presented here accurately represent the structure and function of the ecosystem. However, there are many groups for which better information would improve model reliability. Therefore, we should aim to fill these knowledge gaps in the future, to better inform ecosystem models for coastal marine systems |

collection of amphibians and reptiles from hilly eastern Cambodia The first amphibian and reptile collection is reported from hilly eastern Cambodia since Henri Mouhot's work in 1859. The collection contains 30 species of amphibians and 42 species of reptiles. Leptobrachium mouhoti, new species, and Ophryophryne synoria, new species, are described. Of the remaining collection, 11 species of amphibians (39.3%) and seven species of snakes (33.3%) are reported from Cambodia for the first time. Comparisons of the frogs show strong faunal overlap with that of mountainous central Vietnam, but little faunal overlap with the Cardamom Mountains of southwestern Cambodia |

Commercially important wild mushrooms and fungi of British Columbia : what the buyers are buying / Information collected from 10 wild mushroom buyers in British Columbia in early spring 2002 indicated that over 40 species of mushrooms have been commercially harvested from the forests of the province. Currently, however, two species--pine mushroom and Pacific golden chanterelle--dominate, and seven other species or species groups are handled by half of the buyers responding to the survey. Some of the fungi previously thought to be commercially harvested in British Columbia are in fact brought in from elsewhere. Also, misidentifications and taxonomic uncertainty in some cases mean that the exact identity of the fungi being harvested is not known. Nonetheless, this survey confirms that a variety of edible wild mushrooms from B.C. forests are commercially marketed |

Conservation and the delivery of ecosystem services : a literature review / Ecosystem services are the benefits people obtain from ecosystems, such as clean air, fresh water, and the pollination of crops. The aim of this literature review was to find empirical data illustrating the ways in which conservation land and conservation management activities affect ecosystem services. The widely-held belief that natural ecosystems--such as those found on conservation land in New Zealand--provide a range of ecosystem services is generally supported by the literature. International studies show that natural vegetation can decrease air pollution, regulate local air temperatures, improve water quality, reduce shallow soil erosion, and retain natural nutrient cycles. It can also be beneficial for pest control and pollination on agricultural land. Wetlands can improve water quality and can play a role in drought and flood mitigation. Seagrasses, saltmarsh vegetation, and mangroves can reduce the height and force of waves and play a role in flood protection. In addition, maintaining biodiversity preserves genetic libraries and future options for discoveries of valuable biological compounds. The few studies investigating the effects of conservation management activities on ecosystem services indicate that restoring vegetation can improve water quality and water storage functions, can reverse soil degradation on a local scale, and can restore plant-insect interactions. Additionally, removing some invasive plant species can increase water yield. Unfortunately, very few studies of ecosystem services have been conducted in New Zealand to date, and only some of the international results are likely to be applicable under New Zealand conditions. Accordingly, while conservation is probably beneficial for a range of ecosystem services in New Zealand, the scarcity of local data makes it difficult to ascertain where and when, and to what extent, the majority of those benefits transpire |

Conservation of leopards in Ayubia National Park, Pakistan Large carnivores are important for biodiversity and ecosystem function, yet are very difficult to conserve because of their large home ranges and conflicts with humans. I examined human-leopard conflicts in and near Ayubia National Park, Pakistan, to provide management recommendations for the conservation of leopards. Persecution of leopards by humans has been on the rise primarily due to depredation on livestock and risk to human lives. Since 1989, 16 humans have either been killed or injured in and around Ayubia National Park while leopards faced 44 human-caused mortalities during the same period. I examined the management strategy adopted by NWFP Wildlife Department for leopard conservation, identify gaps, and suggest possible management actions to mitigate the conflicts. For this purpose, I reviewed the management of carnivores including mountain lions, wolves, and grizzly bears to learn from management successes and failures in North America. Based on my review, I make the following recommendations to improve leopard management in and near Ayubia. First, to minimize human-leopard conflicts, educational and information programs to modify human behavior to reduce risks should be developed. Second, predator compensation programs and livestock vaccination programs would help reduce livestock conflicts. Lastly, broader scale management changes such as enhanced protection of areas surrounding Ayubia National Park, re-introduction of extirpated native ungulates as prey for leopards, and improvements in monitoring could benefit leopard conservation |

Consumption of non-toxic baits by grand (Oligosoma grande) and Otago (O. otagense) skinks / Three bait types that are commonly used in pest mammal control programmes were tested for their attractiveness to wild grand (Oligosoma grande) and Otago (O. otagense) skinks, and their potential prey. This was assessed through observations and video recordings in the skinks' natural habitat in north Otago, New Zealand. Both skink species have been assigned a threat status of Nationally Critical. Non-toxic samples of RS5 cereal baits, carrot and FeraCol paste (peanut butter flavoured) were presented in two sizes to free-ranging animals during late March 2006; cereal baits were also presented wet or dry. All bait types were sampled (licked, nudged, or bitten) by both species of skink, but large baits (both wet and dry) appeared to be less attractive and were not consumed. Both species of these threatened skinks were observed consuming small pieces of wet cereal baits and FeraCol paste. Of the potential prey species, one McCann's skink (O. maccanni) was observed consuming a small piece of carrot, and one worm, ground weta (Hemiandrus sp.) and flies consumed wet and dry cereal baits |
