NN/LM PNR Network Outreach Coordinator

The purpose of this position is to coordinate the Network membership program, to provide member libraries with support on NLM systems, including DOCLINE, LinkOut and PubMed; and to develop and implement outreach programs to increase the effective use of health information resources, including NLM products and services, by health professionals without adequate access to information services. The position responsibilities include travel to periodically conduct site visits and workshops, as well as exhibit and present at regional and national conferences.

The Libraries

The Position
The University of Washington Health Sciences Library (HSL) seeks an innovative librarian with expertise in outreach and resource sharing to join the (RML) team for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Northwest Region (NN/LM PNR). The mission of the NN/LM PNR is to improve delivery of health information in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington via a regional network of libraries, agencies, and organizations. An underlying focus of this mission is contributing to the elimination of health disparities by improving health information access for populations that are underserved due to location, poverty, ethnicity, non-English speaking, limited literacy, or adverse health status. NN/LM PNR is funded by a contract from the National Library of Medicine (NLM).
The purpose of this position is to coordinate the Network membership program, to provide member libraries with support on NLM systems, including DOCLINE, LinkOut and PubMed; and to develop and implement outreach programs to increase the effective use of health information resources, including NLM products and services, by health professionals without adequate access to information services. The position responsibilities include travel to periodically conduct site visits and workshops, as well as exhibit and present at regional and national conferences.
Duties will also include working with the staff of seven other regional offices in the NN/LM and staff in the National Network Office (NNO) headquartered at the NLM.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Under the general direction of the Associate Director:
- Coordinate the PNR network membership program, including recruitment of new members and affiliates and ensuring network member participation in and updating of the member database;
- Provide support to libraries inquiring about Network membership; DOCLINE or Loansome Doc participation; and other resource sharing programs;
- Develop training programs using web meetings, online tutorials and simple printed instructions for training staff in a variety of libraries on use for the DOCLINE and SERHOLD systems;
- Plan and lead outreach to priority health workforce (physician assistants, and other health practitioners) via state and regional associations or organizations serving Medically Underserved Areas;
- In conjunction with other RML staff, coordinate outreach to community college libraries and to libraries at minority serving institutions with health professions programs. Cultivate contacts to develop opportunities to offer in-person and distance training for these types of libraries.
- Participate as a team member in the RML to publicize and provide support for a wide range of funding opportunities supporting Network Programs and outreach to underserved health professionals.
- Serve as the Online Contract Reporting System Portal Administrator for the PNR office.
- Develop culturally and linguistically appropriate classes to provide training - both in-person and from a distance - in the effective use of electronic health information resources;
- Co-coordinate the Health Literacy/Community Engagement subcommittee of the NN/LM PNR Regional Advisory Council.
- Serve as editor of the Dragonfly, the PNR’s blog and official channel for news and information;
- Ensure resources included on the NN/LM PNR website are compliant with requirements in Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
Qualifications
Required
- Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.
- Two years of experience in an academic or health sciences or public health environment or the equivalent.
- Demonstrated ability to be a self-starter, taking initiative in setting goals and priorities.
- Experience with a variety of Web applications, such as content management systems and blog software.
- Strong teaching skills and demonstrated experience creating effective instructional and informational materials, including web-deliverable interactive, self-paced lessons, tutorials, and modules that extend effective library education.
- Experience with a variety of Web applications, such as (but not limited to) Dreamweaver (site-editing package), Drupal (content management software) and WordPress (blog software).
- Demonstrated experience with NLM and NN/LM products and services.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to explain technology in plain English.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative and collegial team environment.
- Excellent organizational, time, and project management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to thrive in an environment characterized by ambiguity, change, and occasionally competing agendas.
- Valid driver's license and travel required.
Preferred
- Experience with a variety of Web-deliverable instructional module authoring tools, such as (but not limited to) video production applications, Camtasia Studio, and Moodle.
- Experience working in and leading team-based initiatives, preferably with both library staff and health advocacy or professional associations.
Compensation
Salary
$47,000 minimum. Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and background.
Benefits
Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of Washington Retirement Plan on a matching basis. Vacation is accrued at the rate of 24 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per year. No state or local income tax. More on UW Benefits.
