12-16 hours per week.
Schedule includes Monday-Friday depending on availability between 10 am - 6 pm and Sundays 1:00-5:00 pm, some University Holidays


  • Provide reference service, including assisting library users in locating information resources and services, and providing orientation to and instruction in database and Internet searching
  • Assist users with patent, trademark, standards, technical reports, and other Engineering and UW Libraries’ collections
  • Back up Engineering Library circulation staff and student workers including checking out and renewing material and placing holds
  • May assist with preparation of library guides and web pages and participate in the UW Libraries chat and email reference services
  • May collaborate with librarians to provide instruction sessions to students in engineering courses
  • Support Engineering Library outreach and communication endeavors
  • Caretaker of reference services when librarians are not available
  • Other duties as assigned

    Required Qualifications:

    • Current enrollment in a graduate degree program at the University of Washington
    • Evidence of excellent communication, listening, and interpersonal skills
    • Interest or experience in reference, instruction, and outreach
    • Strong public service orientation and customer service ethic
    • Familiarity and comfort with searching electronic and print reference sources
    • Ability to set priorities and work with minimal supervision
    • Must be available to work Sunday afternoons and some University holidays

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Enrollment in the MLIS program at the UW Information School
    • Experience and/or demonstrated interest in working with a diverse user population
    • Experience in providing direct public service in a library setting, especially at reference, information, or circulation service points
