This exhibition was originally created by the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China. It is a collection of paper-cuts, a traditional Chinese folk art, about Chinese folk sports. The exhibition was developed to provide a Chinese cultural touch to the celebration of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The title of the exhibition has a pun in the word “cut”—cutting the color paper to make the art for the Olympics, which in the Chinese language has the connotation of cutting the ribbon to open the Olympics.
Most of the artworks are now included in the recently published book by Cao Su with the same title, Wei Aoyun Jiancai (Cutting Ribbons for the Olympics). The traveling exhibition also has been on display in the Bay Area, including the Nanhai Art Museum in Millbrae, the San Francisco Public Library, and Chinese Art Museum in Oakland.
In addition, we also have on display—from the collections of the East Asia Library—books about Chinese paper-cuts, Chinese folk sports, and the history of Chinese participation in the Olympics and other international sports.
