Betty Wagner, head of the Architecture-Urban Planning Library, was named an AIA Seattle Honorary Member by the Seattle Chapter of the American Institute of Architects this May. This award recognized Betty as "a person of esteemed character who has rendered to the profession of architecture a valuable service." The Honors Nominating Committee noted that Betty had contributed over 40 years of service to the profession as a librarian.
The Friends of the UW Libraries Book Sale will be held April 28-30, 1995. Donations of books are now being accepted at Suzzallo and Allen Libraries and selected branches and all University Book Store locations. During the 1994-95 academic year the Scholarly Publication Series, sponsored by the UW Libraries, will schedule three presentations by faculty and other researchers on the use of new technology in their research. The quarterly sessions seek to inform members of the campus community about unusual and/or innovative uses of new information technology. Included in the lecture-demonstration series will be discussions of electronic journals, home pages/sites on the World Wide Web, and the use of computers and CD-ROM to disseminate faculty and graduate student research both in the classroom and among colleagues.
The Libraries Scholarly Publications Series Organizing Group welcomes expressions of interest from faculty, researchers, and graduate students both in attending and in making presentations. Come to the Artist Image Bookmark Series in the Walker-Ames room on December 8, 1994 at 7:00 p.m. This lecture will feature Doris Chase, painter, sculptor, and video artist, who has designed the Libraries' annual artist image bookmark.

The Faculty Council on University Libraries will be sponsoring a symposium next spring that will cover "Virtually Yours: Electronic Resources, Wired Professors, Classes Online." The symposium will reach out to faculty, staff and students. Watch for symposium details to be announced later.
Three librarians assumed new titles June 1, 1994. Jill McKinstry became networked information librarian in Library Systems in recognition of her responsibilities with networked services.
Bill Jordan was appointed to the position of systems support librarian with a dual assignment in the Reference and Research Services Division and in Library Systems. Bill has the responsibility for direct user services in reference as well as providing systems support for public services.
Thomas Dowling became the public services networked information librarian on a half-time basis while continuing as computer-based services librarian in the Engineering Library. Thomas will have a lead role in assisting public service units with CD-ROM networking.
Michael Biggins has assumed the position of assistant Slavic and East European librarian. Michael was the Slavic studies librarian at the University of Kansas from 1988 to the present. He has additional experience as an assistant professor of Russian at Knox College in Illinois and St. Michael's College in Vermont and as a Russian language program group leader for summer language programs in Leningrad.
Karen Eliasen, previously library supervisor for the Circulation Division, UW Libraries, has accepted the position of access services/reference librarian at Odegaard Undergraduate Library. Karen is currently enrolled in the graduate program in Technical Communication at the UW.
Sarah Leadley has been appointed reference librarian at the Bothell Branch campus. Sarah was previously with the Reference Division, Lemieux Library, Seattle University. Sarah has also worked as a reference librarian and as a graduate reference assistant in the UW Libraries.
Joan R. Norton has been appointed reference librarian at the Tacoma Branch Campus. She previously held a temporary appointment at the Tacoma Branch Campus. Joan has also worked as a student assistant in Manuscripts and University Archives.
Marion Carey, library supervisor at the Drama Library from 1961 until her retirement in 1975, died May 21, 1994. Ms. Carey joined the UW Libraries in 1959 in the Reference Division.
Anna Fumi Chiong, former head of the Geography Library from 1969 until her retirement in 1982, died May 15, 1994. Ms. Chiong joined the UW Libraries in 1965 as assistant librarian in the Northwest collection. Her many interests included belonging to Ikebana International, being a charter member of the Book Club of Washington and running the library at Plymouth Congregational Church.
Peter Demery, former head of the Bibliography Section in Acquisitions, died August 31, 1994. He retired in 1993 after a career of more than thirty years in the UW Libraries in monograph cataloging, collection development and as head of the Acquisitions Division. Mr. Demery was a voracious reader who also enjoyed gardening and walking.
J. Ronald Todd, who retired from the UW Libraries in 1971, died August 7, 1994. Positions in which Mr. Todd served included curator of the Northwest collection, chief reference librarian and collection development officer.
Janice Mathews, the new Mellon fellow in Manuscripts and University Archives, is here for a year to undertake a variety of projects. She will be heavily involved with collection strategy for private papers, improving finding aids, assisting with retrospective cataloging and putting inventories on the Internet.
During spring quarter the UW Libraries hosted Irja- Leena Suhonen, head of the Bibliographic Department, Helsinki University Library. The Helsinki University Library is also the Finnish National Library. Ms. Suhonen was studying American academic libraries during her visit. The Libraries received a gift of the bibliographic database of the Finnish National Library on CD-ROM which is at the Philosophy Library. Finnish libraries are collectively establishing a computerized network giving nationwide access to up-to-date library and information services for their users. Ms. Suhonen also presented the CD entitled, "Shelves Full of Treasures: Public Libraries 200 years in Finland" to the Graduate School of Library and Information Science. The Finnish Library Association produced the recording to celebrate the jubilee year of Finnish public libraries.
