Charles E. Chamberlin, 70, shaped UW Libraries

Seattle, WA, April 6, 2018

Charles ECharles Chamberlin. Chamberlin, 70, UW Libraries Senior Associate for budget and administrative policy, died on Wednesday, April 4.

“We are totally devastated," said vice provost for digital Initiatives and dean of University Libraries, Lizabeth (Betsy) Wilson.

“Charles was a dear colleague and friend, a mentor, and a major force in shaping the Libraries during his service as Senior Associate Dean from 1987-2012. His influence was great and his legacy large.  He loved the Libraries.

“His presence in the Libraries and across the University will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.”

UWPD responded to a call from a family member who was unable to reach Chamberlin, who was found in his office in Suzzallo Library where he appeared to have died of natural causes.

Chamberlin had been working at 40 percent since his retirement as Librarian Emeritus in 2012.  He joined the UW Libraries in 1981 as Head, Personnel and Administrative Services.

He was an active member and former president of the UW Retirement Association.

Prior to joining the University of Washington, he served as Assistant Undergraduate Services Librarian, Circulation Services Librarian, and Personnel and Budget Officer in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries.

After graduating from Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia in 1970, he served for two years in the Peace Corps in Micronesia, and throughout his career he welcomed opportunities to visit new lands, learn about other cultures, and tour a library or two.

Chamberlin holds an M.A.L.S (1974) from the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Information about a campus gathering for friends and family is forthcoming. Email uwlibs@uw.edu to be notified.
