The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALTCS) has named Steven C. Shadle, serials access librarian at the University of Washington Libraries, the 2010 recipient of the Ulrich's Serials Librarianship Award. This award for distinguished contributions to serials, presented by the Continuing Resources Section of ALCTS, consists of a citation and $1,500 donated by ProQuest through its Serials Solutions business unit.

Steve Shadle has become "the voice of e-serials" cataloging based on his expert knowledge of e-serials and cataloging, his ready answers to serials questions on listservs and the multitude of catalogers and trainers he has trained and mentored. Additionally, Steve is a frequent and popular presenter at meetings and conferences, has made numerous contributions to the serials literature and has shared his knowledge and expertise by supporting the ISSN, being an active participant in professional organizations.

He was a key contributor to the successful development and implementation of the single-record approach for electronic serials, the aggregator-neutral approach for electronic serials and the CONSER standard record. These developments in serials cataloging have helped facilitate access to serials records for countless end-users and researchers. As a member and trainer with SCCTP (Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program), Steve has taught 29 cataloging workshops (reaching more than 500 students) and four train-the-trainer workshops (training 100 serials cataloging trainers) and helped develop curriculum for the workshops. Steve's sense of humor enables him to make electronic serials cataloging accessible and fun.

Steve participated in the ALCTS Advisory Task Force on the Library of Congress Action Plan for Bibliographic Control of Web Resources. He has taught library school classes and served on the implementation team for the University of Washington's OCLC WorldCat Local product. He is a member of the editorial board of Serials Review. Steve's long-term commitment to the serials profession has had an impact not only on the people he has trained and worked with, but also has resulted in improved access to serials records.

The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS), a division of the American Library Association, is the national association for information providers who work in collection and technical services, such as acquisitions, cataloging, collection development, preservation, and continuing resources in digital and print formats.

The University of Washington Libraries is a network of more than 17 units serving three campuses: Seattle, Bothell and Tacoma.
