THE BREAKDOWN OF AN ERA

Several factors caused the BRS-based, single-interface model to no longer be viable:

• The pressures of the Web as delivery mechanism
  • Primary resources traditionally available only in print are now additionally or exclusively available in full-text through the Web
  • Increase in secondary resources available via the web
  • Inability to integrate services/functions from the browser
  • Closed (& inconsistant) Willow environment (UWBRS v. Z39.50) provided no access to the Web
• Budget pressures
  • Campus Computing & Communications Office that had been freely providing Willow development and support would start charging for the service
