Each ACRL unit is asked to address the following issues in order for ACRL to assess how it is making progress on the strategic plan. Please provide a short summary of the Chapter's activities for the following issues.

1. How has the Chapter facilitated professional development activities?

The Washington Chapter of ACRL, in conjunction with the Oregon Chapter of ACRL held its annual conference at the University of Washington’s Pack Forest Conference Center in October 1999. This year’s conference theme was assessment. The conference gave librarians a greater understanding of the role of assessment, especially as it relates to accreditation. In the spring of 2000, the Chapter also co-sponsored, along with CLAMS, College Librarians and Media Specialists, a two-year college professional organization, a conference on critical thinking, curriculum design, information literacy, and assessing student learning.

2. How has the Chapter influenced legislative activities regarding information policy or higher education at the state, regional, or national level?

The Washington Chapter of ACRL has not undertaken specific legislative activities at the state level that is independent of their academic institutions. In the state of Washington, all public institutions of higher learning have personnel specifically designated to serve as lobbyists and liaisons for higher education. These people are duly informed of issues regarding legislative activities. Moreover, academic institutions have library representatives on various State Library advisory boards and committees that assist in the development of information policies relating to libraries throughout the state

3. How has the Chapter contributed to ACRL membership recruitment activities?

Members of the Washington Chapter of ACRL recruited membership from their respective institutions. The University of Washington, Washington State University, and Western Washington University all undertook specific activities to recruit additional members. A report of Chapter activities has also become a standard agenda item to the quarterly meetings of the two-year colleges’ Library and Media Directors Council.

4. Has the Chapter undertaken any special efforts this year?

The Chapter discussed with its membership and then voted on overwhelmingly to incorporate during the coming year. The Chapter also moved much of its information dissemination to electronic formats. This year, the chapter has established it’s own web page and has begun distributing its newsletter solely electronically.
