Each ACRL unit is asked to address the following issues in order for
ACRL to assess how it is making progress on the strategic plan. Please
provide a short summary of the Chapter's activities for the following
issues.
- How has the Chapter facilitated professional development activities?
The Washington and Oregon Chapters of ACRL alternate in hosting an
annual fall conference. Last October 26-27, Washington Chapter
members attended the conference organized by the Oregon Chapter, "Consortial
Cooperation--Key to the Future."
This year it is Washington's turn to host the conference that will
occur October 25-26, 2001. Two national speakers, Roy Tennant
of the California Digital Library and Linda White of the Library of
Congress, will join librarians from Oregon and Washington on the program.
Over $3,000 in funding from vendors has been obtained to help support
the conference.
- How has the Chapter influenced legislative activities regarding information
policy or higher education at the state, regional, or national level?
Last year our President, Charles Lord, attended the national ALA
legislative day in Washington DC along with several other members
of the chapter. They met with several members of the Washington
congressional delegation.
At our fall business meeting, we had a presentation about UCITA that
was quite informative and educational.
We have a new representative to the ACRL Legislative Network and
plan to use the ACRL-NW listserv that we share with the Oregon Chapter
to alert our members to legislative issues and opportunities to influence
decision making.
In Washington, all public institutions of higher learning have personnel
specifically designated to serve as lobbyists and liaisons for higher
education. These people are duly informed of issues regarding
legislative activities. Moreover, academic institutions have
library representatives on various State Library advisory boards and
committees that assist in the development of information policies
relating to libraries throughtout the state.
- How has the Chapter contributed to ACRL membership recruitment activities?
No membership campaign was conducted last year, but we are making
plans for one in the coming year.
- Has the Chapter undertaken any special efforts this year?
In March of 2001, the Chapter purchased liability insurance for its
officers for the first time.
Chapter membership information has been incorporated into a new Access
database.
