"Changing Needs, Changing Roles: Redefining and Promoting the Academic Libray" The 2003 Joint Conference
of the Washington and Oregon |
|
Chris Ferguson |
Chris Ferguson, Dean for Information Resources at Pacific Lutheran University, provides leadership for library, academic and administrative computing, network, and audio, television, and multimedia services. Previous positions include executive director for public services of an integrated library-computing organization at the University of Southern California and director of USC's Leavey Library, which created the nation's first information commons. Dr. Ferguson has published several articles on library services and the next generation of (integrated) information services. In an era of persistent change and discontinuity, academic librarians need all the more to define clearly our roles and values -- both for our organizations and for ourselves. By reconciling competing visions, we can be effective campus-wide information services and technology leaders. By viewing ourselves at the nexus rather than brunt of change, we can transform traditional library values for an increasingly-digital era. And by repeatedly asking ourselves, "Why and for whom are we doing this?" we can make the connections between individual and institution that empower agile and responsive organizations for the next generation of information services. |
