The Visible Librarian:
Establish Your Presence on Campus

The 2007 Joint Conference of the Washington and Oregon
Association of College and Research Libraries

Conference Theme

We all know that our institutions have plenty of people who are non-library users and/or do not see the value of libraries. Until recently though I had never been face to face with a professor who directly communicated to me his belief that students do not need any kind of library instruction or orientation. Now more than ever academic library employees need to be active promoters of our services and resources, and the wider mission of libraries as well. We need to be able to "tell our story," to justify our worth and use the power of personal persuasion to advance the academic library agenda from the front lines.

Conference Attendee Tips

Here are some tips concerning conference attendance:

  • Bring warm clothes (the meeting rooms at Pack Forest are often quite cool) and an extra blanket (Pack Forest provides bedding but if you like to stay really toasty bring a sleeping bag or extra blanket).
  • Dress casually (no business attire at this conference, jeans and sweatshirts are fine).
  • Bring a flash light (the Pack Forest facilities are well lit but a flashlight can still come in handy).
  • Bring ear plugs (lodging in cabins fits the rustic atmosphere of Pack Forest and helps us keep the conference costs very low, but one often ends up rooming with at least someone who is snoring).
  • Come to the conference with an idea of where you would like to stay and with whom if applicable – see Housing Options information above.
  • Come to the conference with a poster for the Mini Poster Session Contest – see detailed information above.
