Washington Chapter / ACRL
Board Meeting Minutes
March 10, 2000
University of Washington

Present:  Andrea Kueter, Brenda Philip, Charles Lord, Dal Symes, Gary Menges, Helene Williams, Jane Shoop, Kathleen Forsythe.

The Board meeting minutes of 10/28/99 passed with no changes.

The current treasurer’s report was submitted.  The Chapter made money on the Pack Forest conference since anticipated costs to partially cover speaker Larry Hardesty never materialized.  The Chapter donated $100 made from the Pack Forest pumpkin sale to Washington Literacy.

Helene will be representing the Chapter at the ACRL pre-conference “ACRL Legislative Advocacy (Become an Academic Librarian Advocate).”

To incorporate or to affiliate, that is the question.  There was very little membership feedback regarding this question, and the responses that the Board did receive were mixed.  A motion to propose to the membership that we incorporate independently was made and unanimously passed.  The reasons were primarily financial.  If the Chapter affiliated with WLA members’ dues would substantially increase.  Dal and Gary will put together a ballot that will be sent out with the election ballot (?) that will include an explanation of the Boards recommendation and a request for approval of the Boards proposal by the membership.

The nominations committee is putting together a slate of candidates for the spring elections.  They already have a number of candidates lined up.  The Board voted to accept the current slate of candidates and to accept any further candidates that the committee proposes.  New members begin their positions on July 1st, so ballots need to be mailed out by mid-April, and need to be returned by mid-May.  Jane will forward the nominating committee a sample of the ballot used in the last election.

Brenda presented a draft of her Chapter web page design.  Suggestions and comments were given, and Chapter members will be solicited for input as well.  Brenda is still negotiating for a permanent home for the web site and hopefully will have a resolution soon so the site can be made public.

The last in the series of CLAMS/ACRL/LMDC co-sponsored workshops, “Librarian as Educator,” will take place on May 11-12 at Bellevue Community College.  The Board agreed to contribute a maximum of $250 to the workshop.  There will not be a Chapter Board meeting or a membership meeting at the workshop.  There was a brief discussion surrounding the issue of further co-sponsoring of workshops and conferences.  In future, the Board will insist on being more involved in the planning process, especially in regards to an up front agreement on the financial arrangements before co-sponsorship is committed to.

Kathleen is working on an electronic version of the next newsletter.  The newsletter will be posted on the ACRL-NW list and on the Chapter web site.

The Fall 2001 Pack Forest conference will be held on October 18th and 19th.  Andrea will contact Pack Forest to inquire about a contract and deposit.  Jane handed out a summary of the evaluation responses from Pack Forest 1999.  The cough drops were a big hit.  Thank you Betty Wagner.

Dal will be contacting ACRL National to find out whether we qualify for any funding from them, and to find out how we go about requesting that funding.

Respectfully Submitted
