Foster Business Library Renovation

Starting this summer, the Foster Business Library is going to be severely impacted by construction work related to the School of Business' PACCAR Hall (Phase One) and Balmer Replacement (Phase Two) projects. Here's a summary of what's planned.

PHASE ONE June 14 to Sept 21, 2010

Work began last year and will continue this summer on the connection project between the Foster Business Library and PACCAR Hall. The goal of the renovation is to re-orient the library to create an entrance on the mezzanine level accessible from the new building.

In order to complete our renovation work before the start of fall quarter, we need to move staff and services out of the Bank of American Executive Education Center portion of the library and turn it over to the contractor for the entire summer.

The Library will close during the coming interim (June 14-18) while we move staff and services over to the former Writing Center space on the Balmer side of the library. We'll re-open in the smaller Balmer space on June 21. The temporary entrance to the library will be through Balmer basement.

On-site services will be relatively limited during summer quarter, but we'll still provide a full range of access and reference services. Users will have access to the stacks but only 10 public PCs and approximately 20 seats. Group study rooms won't be available until fall quarter.

We plan to start moving out of Balmer and back into the renovated space on Sept 14 and re-open by Sept 21, but it could be earlier. The library will need to close again for a week while we move.

PHASE TWO October 2010 to June 2012

Balmer Hall will be demolished and rebuilt during Phase Two. The Foster Library will operate in its newly renovated space next to the construction site for approximately 20 months.

Foster Library's book stacks are in the basement of Balmer so we'll need to move our 60,000 volume collection to Kane Hall shelving and page books in by request for the duration of the project. The books will be moved in late August after summer quarter.

We'll move our collection back to Foster in time for summer quarter, 2012. Our newly built stack area will be smaller than our current space, but we are replacing our existing shelving with compact shelving that will be able to hold the same number of books in the smaller space.
