Proxy Bookmarklet

A bookmarklet is now available for the proxy server.

Once installed, it allows a user to proxy a resource from the resource location, which obviates the need to go through an approved website to start the proxy server.

You can add to the new Proxy Bookmarklet to your Favorites, Bookmarks, or Toolbar. If you do, you can start using the proxy service to access restricted resources without having to go back to a Libraries' website. When you are denied access to a UW-licensed resource when off-campus, click the bookmark, login with your UWNetID, and you will gain access to the restricted resource. Installation instructions are located at http://www.lib.washington.edu/help/proxyTools.html.

Users who tested the bookmarklet found it immensely helpful and one said it's "exactly what's missing" from the proxy server.

Information about it and an "un-proxy a URL" tool can be found at:   http://www.lib.washington.edu/help/proxyTools.html

For more about the proxy server, go to:   UW Off-Campus Proxy FAQ

Examples:

IF YOU ARE:   off-campus, not using the proxy service, clicked on a link to a restricted access journal article from an email or search results, and the website tells you that you don't have access

YOU CAN:   use the "Proxy a URL" tool located on the Connecting to UW Restricted Resources website. Copy and paste the link you clicked into the query box, click go, login with your UWNetID, and you will gain access to the restricted resource.

IF YOU ARE:   off-campus, using the proxy service to access restricted resources while writing a paper, and want to include the correct URL for a citation, but it contains the "offcampus.lib.washington.edu".

YOU CAN:   use the "Un-Proxy a URL" tool located on the Connecting to UW Restricted Resources to translate your URL to its regular form.
