September 30, 2004 -- New loan and recall policies
On September 21, the Libraries implemented a number of new loan policies designed to maximize access to library materials. The number of renewals has been increased, date due reminders will be sent to borrowers with email in their library accounts, and the fine system has been changed to better motivate borrowers to return material on time.
The number of renewals has been increased; most non-reserve items that check out for more than 14 days can be renewed an unlimited number of times, items that have a loan period of 14 day or less can be renewed three times. Books needed by other borrowers cannot be renewed.
To help borrowers remember due dates, the Libraries now sends email date due reminders 2 days before material is due. Borrowers need to have an email address in their library account to receive these email notices. Check your library account to see if you have an email address listed.
The overdue fine system has been changed; overdue fines for non-reserve materials will be $.50 per day with a 4 day grace period, on the fifth day overdue the charge will be $2.50 with a daily increment of $.50 for each additional day overdue. When an item becomes 21 days overdue, a replacement cost and a non-refundable $20 billing fee will be charged. Fines for reserve material will stay the same.
September 29, 2004 -- Fall quarter welcome
The Foster Business Library staff of eleven (including seven students) welcomes Business School faculty and staff back to campus! See the previous news messages for fall quarter hours as well as information about changes since you were last on campus: the new Foster webpage, the new proxy server (for accessing databases from off-campus), and loan code and fine changes. All of these changes were designed to improve library services to students and faculty. For a summary of these changes, see the Foster Business Library News Updates.

Euromonitor is not working this afternoon; it asks for a password and log-in. This connection should take place seamlessly via IP address. The vendor has been notified.
September 27, 2004 -- Group Study Rooms
As of today, group study rooms may be booked at the Circulation Desk. During interim, the rooms were left open and unlocked for student use. With MBA students now on campus, the rooms are again busy and in demand, so regular academic quarter policies are in effect. For more on the Foster Business Library's group study rooms, click here.

September 21, 2004 -- Phishing
Fliers are apparently appearing on campus and in the University District offering free wireless networking from a company called "WIFINATION LLC", and some wireless access points named WIFINATION are available in some spots. The instructions ask you to enter your email address and password to get access. This is probably an attempt to steal UWNetIDs and associated passwords ("phishing" -- see http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/alerts/phishingalrt.htm). Be very careful about entering personal information and/or passwords into an unknown system.
September 20, 2004 -- Interim

Fall quarter hours go into effect on September 29th. The Balmer Cafe is scheduled to reopen for fall quarter on September 27th.

September 2, 2004 -- New connections from off-campus
Most of the databases, electronic journals, and e-books available through the Libraries are restricted to UW faculty, students and staff. You have two options to access these UW restricted resources from off-campus:
- Use the UW dial-in modem pool. Manual and automatic configuration information is available at http://www.washington.edu/computing/connect/. Users who dial into the UW campus modem pool need not do anything more.
- Use the Libraries Proxy Server. If you connect to the Internet via an Internet Service Provider (such as Earthlink or Comcast), you will need to use the UW Libraries Proxy server.
- The UW Libraries is testing a new proxy service which does not require configuring your browser; instead, the new service uses your UWNetID for authentication. To start a session with the new proxy, visit http://offcampus.lib.washington.edu/, or click on the "Off-Campus Access" link in the upper right corner of most pages on the website (both UW Libraries and Health Sciences/HealthLinks). This proxy requires that you always start a session to gain access to restricted resources, so you might want to bookmark the URL.
- More information about this new proxy, including help, can be found at http://www.lib.washington.edu/help/ezhelp.html
- The UW Libraries expects to de-commission the older proxy server, which required browser configuration, at the end of fall quarter, 2004. Information about it is still available.
