January 25, 2005 -- Theft alert
Early this afternoon, a yellow raincoat was stolen from a library user in the Foster Business Library; it had been left on the back of a chair while the person was consulting materials, a few feet away, in the reference area. While thefts in the library are uncommon, they do occur and, in the past, have included a laptop.

The CorpTech EXPLORE CD-ROM database, located on PC #19, is still inoperable. A new 2004 CD-ROM for the Silver Edition of this database has been received and should be fully installed in the next day or two. January 18, 2005 -- Adobe Acrobat on Access + computers
The Adobe Acrobat reader works fine on the library's Access + computers, but creating PDF documents from Microsoft Word is not working. Computer staff are trying to fix this problem but, in the interim, users wishing to create PDF documents on Access+ workstations can either go to one of the campus Computer Labs or try a free online PDF creator from Adobe, at https://createpdf.adobe.com.

January 13, 2005 -- Water leak
Last night, a plumbing leak from a room in Balmer Hall, next to the Foster Business Library's general stacks collections, came through the wall into the library, saturating the drywall and carpet. This morning, UW Physical Plant staff drilled holes in the walls and are installing a de-humidifier to dry things out. They will patch the walls once the area is dry, after which carpet cleaning will begin.
This leak was the 28th leak since the Foster Business Library opened in July of 1997.
January 11, 2005 -- Balmer Copy Center Hours and Printing
This message is to let you know about two changes you'll be seeing soon in the Balmer Copy Center and Foster Business Library.
- Most of the Copy Center's photocopy business is clustered in the first
two
weeks of the quarter and demand falls off steeply after that. Most of the
activity during evening and weekend hours is printing from Foster Library
workstations.
Beginning the third week of each quarter, the Copy Center will reduce its schedule to Monday-Friday daytime hours. Here is the winter quarter schedule:
Hours of operation during first two weeks (Jan 3 - Jan 16):
Monday thru Friday: 8:00am - 8:00pm
Saturday and Sunday: 1:00pm - 5:00pmHours of operation after the first two weeks (Jan 18 -Mar 18):
Monday thru Friday: 8:00am - 5:00pm - To serve printing needs during the hours the Copy Center is closed, Copy Services has added a self-service print station in the Foster Business Library reference area. Library users now have two printers to choose from -- one in the Copy Center and one in the library. Print jobs sent to the "Balmer Copy Center" will go to both printers, so users have access to printing all hours the library is open. Since the Copy Center has always had shorter hours than the Library, this will be an improvement for late evening and weekend users.
The self-service print station uses the same Copy Services "Quick Card" as the library photocopiers. The cost for printing is currently 8 cents per page, but will increase to 10 cents per page on February 1st.
If you have questions about the Copy Center or printing, please contact one of us. Thanks.

January 8, 2005 -- Proxy server bookmarklet
Need to access Foster Business Library databases from off-campus? If so, you need to use the proxy server to be authenticated as a UW student or faculty member to get into these databases.
A bookmarklet is now available for the proxy server. Once installed, it allows a user to proxy a resource from the resource location, which obviates the need to go through an approved website to start the proxy server. Users who tested the bookmarklet found it immensely helpful and one said it's "exactly what's missing" from the proxy server. Information about it and an "un-proxy a URL" tool can be found at:
