Foster Business Library Databases:

The Foster Business Library offers an extensive collection of business databases on its homepage; see under Business Databases; see also the four folders at the top of that list for lists of Foster databases by topic:  books, articles--full text, articles--citations and abstracts, and company and industry.   For more information on the three dozen Foster business databases, click here.   For more information about which of the three dozen Foster business databases to use, click here.   For more information on accessing Foster databases from off campus, click here. For answers to some frequently-asked questions about connecting to UW library databases from off-campus, click here. And, finally, see the UW Libraries' Database Usage Guidelines.

  • Hoovers Online:   Under Business Databases on the Foster Business Library homepage. Hoovers Online offers information about 14,000 public and private companies worldwide, with links to company homepages and annual reports, charts, company capsule, competitors, divisions, earnings, financials, Fortune and Forbes rankings, history, industry information, insider trading, mission statements, news links, press releases, officers, patents, products, SEC filings, splits, subsidiaries, etc. Most information on this site is free and available on the Web (not just through the Foster Business Library homepage) but, via the Foster homepage, you can access the more detailed Subscriber Content.

See the Company Fact Sheet for the Amgen as well as the longer Company Overview; see the Company Fact Sheet for Immunex and their Historical Financials; see also the link to their 128 SEC Filings, going back to 1995. See the link to Financials. See also the list of companies (and competitors) in the Biopharmaceuticals and Biotherapeutics industry and the company's Competitor information. See also the Biotechnology Overview and Web Resources.

  • Factiva:   Use the Company Quick Search tab near the top of the screen to initiate a search for information about public or private companies; considerably more information is avaiable for the former than for the latter. (This database is only accessible from the library computers in the Foster Business Library and Balmer, MacKenzie Lewis Halls and SeaFirst Executive Education Center, on the Seattle campus, and at the Tacoma Campus and on Bothell Campus Libraries. It is not accessible from any other location on campus or through a dial-in connection.)

A Company Quick Search for Amgen retrieved information about the company's history, news about the company, press releases, trade articles, pictures, financials, etc. Factiva has no specific company information about Immunex.

  • Investext:   On the Foster Business Library homepage, listed under Business Databases; also listed under Company and Industry. Investext contains indexing and the full text of company and industry research reports prepared by leading Wall Street firms, as well as regional and international brokerage and financial firms. All reports are in PDF format. (This database is available widely on campus and may be accessed from home via the U.W. connectivity kit or via the Libraries' proxy server.)

A company search for the ticker symbol AMGN produced a list of over 2,400 reports. A search for Immunex produced a list of over 700 reports. A keyword search for Immunex and Merger produced a list of four reports; for Immunex and Amgen, over 40 reports. A search for reports on the Biotechnology industry produced over 13,000 reports.

  • Lexis-Nexis Academic:   To find company information, go to Business and then to Company Financial where you can obtain financial and other data for companies. Information is available from twenty different sources (each of which must be searched separately). Included among the sources is Hoovers Online, with members' access to company profiles. SEC filings, particularly company 10K annual reports, are a particularly rich source of company as well as industry information. Use your browser's Find command (or Control-F) to locate references to particular terms of interest in 10K filings such as trends, strategy, competitors, industry, etc. (This database is available widely on campus and may be accessed from home via the U.W. connectivity kit or via the Libraries' proxy server.)

A search for SEC 10-K reports for IMNX retrieved 73 reports or parts of reports, from 1995 to 2001, many of the later reports with references to the merger with Amgen. See also the SEC Prospectuses for Immunex which refer to the merger, using focus terms Amgen and Merger. A 10-K search for AMGN, for all dates, retrieved 118 filings or parts of filings, back to 1990.

  • Value Line:   On the Foster Business Library homepage, listed under Business Databases.   Stock information and advice on 1,700 companies, 90 industries, the stock markets and the economy; an online version of the print Value Line Investment Survey.

Immunex is not included in this database but Amgen is.

  • Compact Disclosure:   Information on over 10,000 public U.S. corporations, including ownership, size, current and 5-year summary financial data, earnings, directors and officers, annual cash flow, ratios and stock price information. Updated quarterly. Note the various backfiles which must be accessed separately. This CD-ROM database is available only in the Foster Business Library.

Complete financials for Amgen and Immunex are available in this database and its backfiles, including details about ownership.

Web Resources:

Unlike library databases, these online resources are available wherever you have web access; they do not require that you access them via the UW Connectivity Kit or the UW Libraries Proxy Server for authentication. For links to business websites by topic, see Business Resources on the Web on the Foster Business Library homepage. Good sources for business topics include trade associations (which often provide industry data unavailable elsewhere) and government regulatory and oversight agencies (which are also a good source for industry data). When using web resources, be sure to evaluate the credibility of these resources.

  • Amgen, Inc.   Company websites often provide extensive amounts of corporate information including histories of the company, investor information such as annual reports and Securities and Exchange Commission filings, historical stock prices, executive biographies, company news and press releases, etc. Look for this information under headings for Investor Relations, About The Company, etc.

A web search for www.immunex.com takes you to the homepage for Amgen. See Amgen's Investor Center for merger information, financials, SEC filings, annual reports for the past three years, etc. See also About Amgen. A site search for Immunex produced over 90 documents.

  • Quicken.Com:   This site is a good source for information about companies and about their position among their competitors; use the Compare Companies feature on the left menu for this information.

See the company profile for Amgen as well as the company's dominant position among its competitors in terms of market capitalization in the Biotechnology industry.

  • Yahoo! Finance:   This site is excellent for company and investment information as well as an excellent source for financial ratio comparisons with industry, sector and S&P 500.

See the company profile for Amgen as well as the excellent Ratio Comparisons for the company, its industry, its sector, and the S&P 500.

  • Biotechnology Industry Organization:   "In 1993, when there were but a handful of biotechnology drugs on the market and the sequencing of the human genome was pegged for completion somewhere around 2005, two small Washington-based biotechnology trade organizations merged to create the Biotechnology Industry Organization, better known as BIO. One of the founding organizations, the Industrial Biotechnology Association (IBA), primarily represented larger, established companies on Capitol Hill and before federal regulatory agencies; the other, the Association of Biotechnology Companies (ABC), represented emerging companies and universities, and focused on technology transfer issues, meetings and other business development activities. BIO united the organizations' 503 companies and 18 employees under one umbrella." Amgen is a member of this organization.

See their Guide to Biotechnology and Industry Statistics.

  • Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America:   "The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) represents the country's leading research-based pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies." Amgen is a member of this organization.

Foster Business Library Articles:

In addition to the 800 journals in the Foster Business Library Periodicals Collection, the Foster Business Library offers access to 11,000 full text periodical articles through its full text article databases such as: ABI/Inform Global, Factiva, and Lexis-Nexis Academic. These article databases may be found on the Foster Business Library homepage, listed alphabetically under Business Databases or in the Articles: Full Text folder.

Of these three main sources, all but Factiva are available from any computer on the campus network (as well as from home) via the UW Connectivity Kit or via the Libraries' proxy server. The easiest of these databases to use is ABI/Inform Global. For more information about accessing Foster Business Library databases from off campus, click here. For more information about business databases, click here.

  • ABI/Inform Global:

This database offers full text articles for over 800 journals. To find articles on specific topics, search by word or phrase by keying your search phrase into the search box. ABI/Inform Global includes journals but not national or Washington state newspapers (though the Wall Street Journal is included). It also does not include valuable trade and industry and other periodicals. Your searches will span the widest possible array of publications by expanding your search to all databases in ABI/Inform. To expand your search to include all collections in this database, click on Select multiple databases, to the right of the search box. Click on all of the databases.

Your search terms will be highlighted in red in each article. For tips on searching this database, click here.

A search for Immunex, in all databases, produced a list of over 2,000 articles. A similar search for Immunex and Amgen and Merger produced a list of just over 100 articles, including some about Amgen's write-off of "3 billion worth of Immunex in-process research and development in one chunk rather than spreading it over several quarters" ("Biotech Giant Amgen Takes $2.6 Billion Loss on Costs of Immunex Merger," Knight Ridder Tribune Business News, October 24, 2002, page 1). Of the 119 articles generated by the search for this phrase, one article was in a scholarly journal; three, in magazines; 28, in trade publications; and 68, in newspapers.

A search for CO(Amgen), in all databases, produced a list of over 1,500 articles. A search for CO(Amgen, Inc.) (with the added Inc.) produced a list of more than 900 articles. A company search for CO(Amgen, Inc.), looking for associated narrowing terms in this database, showed just one such term:  SUB(Pharmaceutical industry). A search for CO(Amgen Inc) and SUB(Pharmaceutical industry) produced a list of just over 100 articles. A search for CO(Amgen) and Mergers, also in all databases, produced a list of more than 150 articles while a search for CO(Amgen) and Mergers and Analysts produced 23 articles.
