This database includes 32 10-K reports or parts of reports for KTO, going back to 1997.
The latest SEC 10-K filing for KTO includes
references to the company's market share in the snowboard industry: "management believes K2 has
...the #2 market position worldwide in snowboard
products." It also mentions the snowboard market: "The snowboard market, which is highly
fragmented, has been consolidating in favor of the larger, better
established brands. K2 manufactures most of its own snowboards."
"K2's competition varies among its business lines. The sporting goods
markets and recreational products markets are generally highly competitive,
with competition centering on product innovation, performance and styling,
price, marketing and delivery. Competition in these products (other than
snowboards and active wear) consists of a relatively small number of large
producers, some of whom have greater financial and other resources than K2.
A relatively large number of companies compete in snowboards and active
wear."
"In the sporting goods segment, net sales increased 6.0% to
$509.6 million from $480.6 million in 1999. The increase was attributable
to strong demand during the year for most of the products in the segment.
Snowboard products, Kickboard scooters, fishing tackle and Stearns marine
products registered double-digit growth. The increase in shipments of
snowboard products reflected strong demand for K2 and Ride products and
from the full year benefit of the 1999 Ride acquisition."
A company search for KTO retrieved a list of 119
reports. A Keyword search for snowboard retrieved a list of four
reports, the most recent of which was dated August 1999.
A search for the keyword Snowboard produced a list of just two tables, both from
the Consumer Product Safety
Commission (about children's head injuries).
The company homepage has a separate section for K2
Snowboards but the site is graphic intensive and appears to have no corporate information
whatsoever.
See the company profile for K2 as well as the
company's position among its competitors
in terms of
market capitalization.
The association website includes a Research and Statistics area, with
data on sports participation and consumer purchases. Snowboarding is one of the sports activities
tracked. There appears to be no search engine at this site.
This site has a search feature; a search for Snowboard produced a
list of news and product links such as Americans Push the Envelope with
Extreme Sports. Some SGMA Publications and
market reports are free and available for downloading in PDF format.
See their News & Research section,
including a Short History of
Snowboarding and How Snowboards Are Made,
among other reports.
See the Linx section for a long list of snowboard
industry manufacturer links (including K2).
See the Snowboard History Timeline, Part One and

Unlike library databases, these Web resources are available wherever
you have web access; they do not require that you access them via the UW Connectivity Kit or the UW Libraries Proxy Server for authentication. When using web resources, be sure to
evaluate the credibility of these resources. For a subject index to web resources, see Business Resources on the Web on the Foster Business Library homepage.

Foster Business Library Books:
Circulation status is indicated in the box in the middle of each online catalog record, on the right. Check Shelf indicates that the book should be on the shelves under that call number and available for you to check out. Due and a date indicates that the book is already checked out to someone and is due back on the date indicated.
The Foster general stacks collection is located south of the main part of the Foster Business Library, through the two pass-throughs into the basement of Balmer. The arrangement is by call number, from A (at the east end, near the Copy Center) to Z (at the far west end).
A keyword search for Snowboard retrieved just one irrelevant record. A keyword search for the broader term Sporting Goods, limited to the Foster Business Library, retrieved a list of seven records.
Foster Business Library Corporate Annual Reports:
The Foster Business Library maintains a collection of several thousand annual reports for hundreds of U.S. and foreign companies. These reports are filed in lateral filing cabinets near the Foster Reference desk under the sign Corporate Annual Reports. Annual reports for companies in an industry can be a valuable source of information about the industry itself. For a list of all the companies in the Corporate Annual Reports collection, click here. For an index to corporate annual reports in the collection by industry sector, click here. For an index to companies in the collection with headquarters outside the U.S., click here.
This collection includes reports for K2 and for Ride, Inc (before it was acquired by K2).
Foster Business Library Articles:
Of these three main sources, all but Factiva are available from any computer on the campus network (as well as from home) via the UW Connectivity Kit or via the Libraries' proxy server. The easiest of these databases to use is ABI/Inform Global. For more information about accessing Foster Business Library databases from off campus, click here. For more information about business databases, click here.
This database offers full text articles for over 800 journals. To find articles on specific topics, search by word or phrase by keying your search phrase into the search box. ABI/Inform Global includes journals but not national or Washington state newspapers (though the Wall Street Journal is included). It also does not include valuable trade and industry and other periodicals. Your searches will span the widest possible array of publications by expanding your search to all databases in ABI/Inform. To expand your search to include all collections in this database, click on Select Multiple Databases, to the right of the search box. Click then on Select All Databases.
Your search terms will be highlighted in red in each article. For tips on searching this database, click here.
For example, a search in this database, in All Collections, for K2 w/3 Snowboard?,
produced eight full text articles, searching for this term in Citations and Abstracts;
expanding this search throughout the full text of all articles produced 46 articles.
Changing the search to Snowboard? Industry produced six full text articles,
searching for this term in Citations and Abstracts; expanding this search throughout the full
text of all articles produced 32 articles. A search for
Snowboard? Industry and Market Share
produced no full text articles, searching throughout the full
text of all articles.
