Foster Business Library Databases:

The Foster Business Library offers an extensive collection of business databases on its homepage; see under Business Databases; see also the four folders at the top of that list for lists of Foster databases by topic:  Books, Articles—Full Text, Articles--Citations and Abstracts, and Company and Industry.   For more information on the three dozen Foster business databases, click here.   For more information on which of the three dozen Foster business databases to use, click here.   For more information on accessing Foster databases from off campus, click here.   For information about responsible database usage, click here.

  • Hoovers Online:   Under Business Databases on the Foster Business Library homepage. Hoovers Online offers information about 14,000 public and private companies worldwide, with links to company homepages and annual reports, charts, company capsule, competitors, divisions, earnings, financials, Fortune and Forbes rankings, history, industry information, insider trading, mission statements, news links, press releases, officers, patents, products, SEC filings, splits, subsidiaries, etc. Some information on this site is free and available on the Web (not just through the Foster Business Library homepage) but, via the Foster homepage, you can access the more detailed Premium Content.

See the company fact sheet for K2, Inc., as well as the longer company overview for K2. See also the fact sheet and list of companies in the Sporting Goods & Equipment industry.

  • Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe:   To find company information, go to Business where you can obtain financial data for companies, Securities and Exchange Commission reports and filings, annual reports from 1984 to 1995, information about public, private and foreign companies, mergers, and bankruptcies. Information is available from twenty different sources (each of which must be searched separately). Included among the sources is Hoovers Online, with members' access to company profiles. SEC filings, particularly the 10K annual reports, are a particularly rich source of company information. Use your browser's Find command (or Control-F) to locate references to particular terms of interest in 10K filings such as trends, strategy, competitors, industry, etc. (This database is available widely on campus and may be accessed from home via the U.W. connectivity kit or via the Libraries' proxy server.)

This database includes 32 10-K reports or parts of reports for KTO, going back to 1997. The latest SEC 10-K filing for KTO includes references to the company's market share in the snowboard industry:   "management believes K2 has ...the #2 market position worldwide in snowboard products." It also mentions the snowboard market:  "The snowboard market, which is highly fragmented, has been consolidating in favor of the larger, better established brands. K2 manufactures most of its own snowboards."

"K2's competition varies among its business lines. The sporting goods markets and recreational products markets are generally highly competitive, with competition centering on product innovation, performance and styling, price, marketing and delivery. Competition in these products (other than snowboards and active wear) consists of a relatively small number of large producers, some of whom have greater financial and other resources than K2. A relatively large number of companies compete in snowboards and active wear."

"In the sporting goods segment, net sales increased 6.0% to $509.6 million from $480.6 million in 1999. The increase was attributable to strong demand during the year for most of the products in the segment. Snowboard products, Kickboard scooters, fishing tackle and Stearns marine products registered double-digit growth. The increase in shipments of snowboard products reflected strong demand for K2 and Ride products and from the full year benefit of the 1999 Ride acquisition."

  • Investext:   On the Foster Business Library homepage, listed under Business Databases; also listed under Company and Industry. Investext contains indexing and the full text of company and industry research reports prepared by leading Wall Street firms, as well as regional and international brokerage and financial firms. All reports are in PDF format. (This database is available widely on campus and may be accessed from home via the U.W. connectivity kit or via the Libraries' proxy server.)

A company search for KTO retrieved a list of 119 reports. A Keyword search for snowboard retrieved a list of four reports, the most recent of which was dated August 1999.

  • Statistical Universe:   Under Business Databases on the Foster Business Library homepage. Statistical Universe is an index to statistical data in commercial, international and U.S. government publications. Try the Power Tables for quick access to tables of data in GIF format.

A search for the keyword Snowboard produced a list of just two tables, both from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (about children's head injuries).

Web Resources:

Unlike library databases, these Web resources are available wherever you have web access; they do not require that you access them via the UW Connectivity Kit or the UW Libraries Proxy Server for authentication. When using web resources, be sure to evaluate the credibility of these resources. For a subject index to web resources, see Business Resources on the Web on the Foster Business Library homepage.

  • K2 Inc:  Company homepages are often an excellent source for information about company strategy, financials, plans, investor materials such as annual reports and SEC filings, company news and press releases, and company history.

The company homepage has a separate section for K2 Snowboards but the site is graphic intensive and appears to have no corporate information whatsoever.

  • Quicken.Com:    This site is a good source for information about companies and about their position among their competitors; use the Compare Companies feature on the left menu for this information.

See the company profile for K2 as well as the company's position among its competitors in terms of market capitalization.

  • National Sporting Goods Association:   Trade associations are often excellent sources of industry information, statistics, and data, frequently in more detail than statistics from government sources. This trade association claims to be the world's largest sporting goods trade association, its members including retailers, dealers, wholesalers, suppliers, and sales agents in the sporting goods industry. While much of the site is restricted to members, there is a good deal of public information available to guests (but no search feature).

The association website includes a Research and Statistics area, with data on sports participation and consumer purchases. Snowboarding is one of the sports activities tracked. There appears to be no search engine at this site.

  • Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association:   This organization is the "North American trade association of sports apparel, athletic footwear, licensed products, fitness and sporting goods equipment manufacturers and national brand distributors."

This site has a search feature; a search for Snowboard produced a list of news and product links such as Americans Push the Envelope with Extreme Sports. Some SGMA Publications and market reports are free and available for downloading in PDF format.

  • SnowSports Industries America:   This organization is "the national, nonprofit, member-owned trade association of more than 800 competing snow sports product manufacturers, suppliers and distributors working together to promote and develop the snow sports industry." Its website offers a search engine and information about consumer and participation trends in snow sports, including snowboarding.

See their News & Research section, including a Short History of Snowboarding and How Snowboards Are Made, among other reports.

  • Snowboarding.Com:   This meta snowboard site includes links to sources of information on all aspects of snowboarding, including products, competitions, resorts, etc.

See the Linx section for a long list of snowboard industry manufacturer links (including K2).

  • EXPN:   This site appears to be a source of information for people interested in sports such as skiing, skate and snowboarding, BMX and motocross, etc.

See the Snowboard History Timeline, Part One and parts two and three, some of which mention manufacturers.

  • TW Snow:   This site appears to be a magazine about snowboarding, with a section about the snowboard business. Or it may be a separate magazine about the snowboard business; it's unclear from the website--but the website includes a search engine.

A search for K2 retrieved a list of over 500 news articles about the company.

Foster Business Library Books:

The Foster Business Library maintains a collection of over 70,000 books on all business topics, including many books useful for country research. To identify relevant books, go to the UW Libraries Catalog on the Foster Business Library homepage (under Business Databases). Try searching by keyword. Use the Limit/Sort feature to create a list of books in the Foster Business Library and in order from newest book to oldest. To do so, use the pulldown menu under WHERE item is located to specify Foster Business Library and click on the box near the bottom Sort results by year. Then click on Limit/sort items retrieved using above data. Clicking on the titles in the resulting list will bring up the full catalog record, indicating which Foster area has the book (general stacks, reference, reserve, etc.), the call number and the circulation status.

Circulation status is indicated in the box in the middle of each online catalog record, on the right. Check Shelf indicates that the book should be on the shelves under that call number and available for you to check out. Due and a date indicates that the book is already checked out to someone and is due back on the date indicated.

The Foster general stacks collection is located south of the main part of the Foster Business Library, through the two pass-throughs into the basement of Balmer. The arrangement is by call number, from A (at the east end, near the Copy Center) to Z (at the far west end).

A keyword search for Snowboard retrieved just one irrelevant record. A keyword search for the broader term Sporting Goods, limited to the Foster Business Library, retrieved a list of seven records.

Foster Business Library Articles:

In addition to the 800 journals in the Foster Business Library Periodicals Collection, the Foster Business Library offers access to 11,000 full text periodical articles through its full text article databases such as: ABI/Inform Global, Factiva, and Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe. These article databases may be found on the Foster Business Library homepage, listed alphabetically under Business Databases or in the Articles: Full Text folder.

Of these three main sources, all but Factiva are available from any computer on the campus network (as well as from home) via the UW Connectivity Kit or via the Libraries' proxy server. The easiest of these databases to use is ABI/Inform Global. For more information about accessing Foster Business Library databases from off campus, click here. For more information about business databases, click here.

  • ABI/Inform Global:

This database offers full text articles for over 800 journals. To find articles on specific topics, search by word or phrase by keying your search phrase into the search box. ABI/Inform Global includes journals but not national or Washington state newspapers (though the Wall Street Journal is included). It also does not include valuable trade and industry and other periodicals. Your searches will span the widest possible array of publications by expanding your search to all databases in ABI/Inform. To expand your search to include all collections in this database, click on Select Multiple Databases, to the right of the search box. Click then on Select All Databases.

Your search terms will be highlighted in red in each article. For tips on searching this database, click here.

For example, a search in this database, in All Collections, for K2 w/3 Snowboard?, produced eight full text articles, searching for this term in Citations and Abstracts; expanding this search throughout the full text of all articles produced 46 articles.

Changing the search to Snowboard? Industry produced six full text articles, searching for this term in Citations and Abstracts; expanding this search throughout the full text of all articles produced 32 articles. A search for Snowboard? Industry and Market Share produced no full text articles, searching throughout the full text of all articles.
